I went through a checklist, going over all of the small "tells:" sheer socks, double Windsor knots, accessories and bright colors. But overall the key word that stuck to my mind is one of excess. Suit f3tish is about excess. We overdo it. We don't just wear a suit because we have to. We dress to the nines, accessorizing to the hilt, going lavish and overboard. Custom details? Check. Custom satin linings? Check. Custom shirts with too many buttons on the collar? (Never enough buttons.) Also check. The list goes on: fabulous lace-ups corseted around our sheer socked feet, jutting pocket silks and jutting double Windsor ties spilling forth from our lapels like phallic fountains. All of this is a step beyond what the straight menswear guys would ever do. They are a beige lot, the straights. Their menswear is all about restraint. But to us, more is more.
