It should be noted that assessment against a 15th Service Standard point focused on sustainability only applies currently to projects going through Defra service assessments and not to those going through full GDS service assessments. However, we are working closely with GDS and the work that Defra is leading on will inform updates to the GDS Service Manual and Service Standard in due course, as well rollout of this through all government departments.

I ask the Minister to consider using the contract renewal point to stop the chaotic expansion of the Palantir platform monopoly, to work to a staged exit with a retender for British companies to build a replacement for Palantir, and to deliver a better, long-term solution providing British sovereign capabilities in line with principles outlined by the Science and Research Minister and the Prime Minister.

The current contract delivers a subscription service that leaves no deliverables after the subscription—no software, no improvements and no intellectual property after spending more than £330 million. All the specially written software and intellectual property rights belong to the supplier, says the contract. All the rights to any know-how are explicitly retained by the supplier and not passed across on termination of the contract. The contract delivers no software—not one line—just a subscribed service; a permanent lock-in; a single point of failure.

Reactions to the National Data Library

● Initial associations with the term "National Data Library" evoked concerns about a central repository of data with public access, shaping participants’ scepticism towards the initiative. The use of the word "library" significantly influenced these concerns.

● Limited information and detail about the NDL meant attitudes were heavily influenced by broader views on government data sharing, public service experiences, and technological engagement.

● Despite recognising potential public service improvements from data sharing facilitated via the NDL, participants often defaulted to questioning whether the government has undisclosed intentions.

● Providing information about the NDL's proposed design as an access facilitator rather than a centralised repository helped alleviate some concerns. However, misconceptions persisted about it being a central store of data, with participants often returning to this perception of the NDL despite being told otherwise.

● Participants' professional exposure to data sharing and technology strongly influenced their ability to understand the NDL’s potential benefits and applications. This was the case across all social grades and region.

Not very enlightening, given low public awareness. Participants don't seem to have been given any steer on what "government data" means in context of the NDL

"I was told 'the FDP will do that' and that they would talk to my boss to make sure I stopped work on the tool I was developing,” the person said. "It was a very real threat and I had colleagues tell me to 'watch yourself'."

The first analytics official added: "When letters go out saying, 'Sign this or we’ll call your chief executive', that doesn't build goodwill. It creates compliance, not commitment."

If I'd have let it, my AI agent would happily have run off to compare neighbours' floor areas by querying the Gov.uk Energy Performance Certificate API; it would have measured neighbours' extensions from Ordnance Survey; downloaded Land Registry's historic house price dataset; searched property websites for number of bedrooms; and researched how best to craft an appeal over my council tax band to the Valuation Office Agency. It would then have written a far better appeal letter than I ever could and submitted it on my behalf. Just like that – all without any intervention on my part.

Now I might still have lost the appeal, but the cost to me in time and hassle would have been negligible compared to even three months ago – one click and about 12p, which is the most expensive it'll ever be. The friction that stops people from appealing their council tax band just disappeared. Ditto every other public service.

Det handler ikke kun om teknologi – men om digital suverænitet, kontrol over data og mindre afhængighed af enkelte leverandører.

New research, led by HM Courts & Tribunals Service (HMCTS), will explore how AI can be used to transcribe court hearings and open the door to faster, cheaper access to court records for victims and others who need them.

Costly court transcript fees have meant that victims have had to fork out hundreds – and in some cases thousands of pounds – to access exactly what was said in court to help provide answers and closure.

The findings have the potential to significantly reduce these fees and mark another step towards greater transparency - breaking down barriers and making criminal court transcripts far easier to obtain for those who need them most.
