Design for Today : the magazine of the Design & Industries Association : August 1934 : cover : photograph by Paul Popper : This striking cover is that of the August 1934 edition of the short-lived magazine the DIA sponsored - the subject being speed. The cover photograph is by Paul Popper and is of a racing car bonnet with the number 46. This covers the lower half of the cover with the upper half giving the magazine title and details in a san serif typeface on a light blue background. The Design & Industries Association, formed in 1915 to promote 'good design' across commercial and industrial activities, was active between the wars - and was, in many ways, highly influential in terms of British design, graphics and products. If never 'mainstream' the DIA, through its individual and corporate members, formed part of the debate and practical demonstrations that followed through into the post-war debates on design ('Britain Can Make It) and even the 1951 Festival of Britain.
