The D major scale has the same intervals as any other major scale, and like any other major scale it’s name is also the name of the 1st and 8th note. Major scale intervals are: tonic, whole, whole, half, whole, whole, whole and half step to the octave. In the D major scale, the notes are D, E, F#, G, A, B, C# and D, corresponding to the 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8. A major triad uses the 1, 3 and 5 notes from the scale so a D major triad uses D (1), F# (3) and A (5). This scale is called the Aeolian or natural minor scale. It uses notes number 1, 2, b3, 4, b6 and b7 so in the key of D, the notes are D, E, F(b3), G, A, Bb(b6), C (b7) and the octave D. We can find those notes on 2 string! Since the pattern of the notes on the 3 strings is 5 / 1 / 3 (it’s ok if they are out of order- we call that an "inversion") we can move that shape up and down the neck and for every position, the relationship of the notes is still going to be 5 / 1 / 3. Every time we move to a new position, the numbers stay the same relative to one another but the notes change! Whatever note is on the B string, that is the name of the major triad you are playing in that position. Try this exercise on for size! Strike the open D string, then the 3 notes on the 1, 2 and 3 strings. Strike the open D string, then move to the next position and so on. It's not too hard and it sounds kind of cool, right? Follow the pattern in the diagram. If you're interested in a free online lesson, reserve your time here: https://app.acuityscheduling.com/schedule.php?owner=17512163
