Kaveh hears it too, faintly: steps dragging across wooden floorboards, slow and laborious—growing closer. “This is your last warning: if you don’t open the door, I will be compelled to use force to—…” Cyno trails off at the unmistakable drag of a key turning within the hole. A lock clicks unlatched and then the door is pulled open from inside. Kaveh raises his broadsword, ready to deal with whatever awaits inside. …Whatever, except for this.

“Should he be wandering about on his own?” he asks, however, dutifully following Tighnari outside once he stands up at a reasonable speed and stretches himself enough to be able to walk straight. Kaveh isn’t sure he likes the way Tighnari raises an eyebrow at him. It makes him feel the way his friend Zaida says everyone made her feel for having perfectly reasonable concerns when her twins were born. “I don’t see why not.”

One of these days I'll write a Tighnari-centric thingie. Until then, he's doomed to be the funniest guy around when he gets involved in his friends' drama against his will.

Not as much as if he had spent the last three nights sleeping instead of working on three simultaneous commissions, but in relatively good spirits—to the point he didn’t rise to take a single bait Alhaitham hung low and close in the hope of triggering yet another trivial squabble to get them through breakfast. Once I hand these blueprints over, I’ll be free, Kaveh informed, smiling even as the bruised rings under his eyes dipped into his coffee. So either Kaveh had collapsed in the middle of the street to take a much needed nap, or… “What kind of accident did he get into?” Tamara breathed out through her nose, then in. Her next words came out with the artificial intonation of a poorly practiced script. “Due to the circumstances he was found in, it’s highly unlikely that his injuries have been caused accidentally,” she said—irritatingly roundabout. “He was hanged from a tree in Avidya Forest.” …Well. That made no sense.

“I talked to Roya,” he begins. It has Kaveh instantly raising an eyebrow, but he waits for his roommate to continue. “She believes, and I agree with her, that it is high time for you to consider moving out of here.” The sunlight stills. The leftover warmth in Kaveh’s fingertips dissipates. Alhaitham’s gaze is fixed on his tea, on the leaves floating on a dyed surface inside the infuser. Kaveh feels his voice scrape up his throat, more pain than anger. “Are you kicking me out?” Alhaitham drums his fingers on the cup. “Ours was never a permanent arrangement. Your current situation is stable enough to afford renting a dwelling on your own.” From start to finish, there is no flaw in the reasoning. Alhaitham’s statements are truthful, his logic flawless—Kaveh has indeed saved up enough to stop taking advantage of what littlekindness his roommate is capable of, even though he hoped to gather a little more mora in order to move into a somewhat better place. …That’s what he likes telling himself, anyway. “You’re kicking me out.”

Next morning, everything is normal. Familiar. Kaveh wakes up first to prepare two cups of coffee and arranges some leftover snacks nicely in a bowl. Alhaitham—or a sluggish creature that resembles him but requires caffeine to be functional—drags his feet into the kitchen and acknowledges the effort with a grateful grunt, right before sticking his big hand in the snack bowl and destroying Kaveh's meticulous composition without a care. Kaveh doesn't ask why Alhaitham looked at him like that yesterday—partly because the last thing he needs so early in the morning is a boner—and in turn Alhaitham doesn't ask why Kaveh locked himself up in his room for hours afterwards and didn’t have dinner. It's for the best, Kaveh tells himself.
