The fuzzy flowers of #Hakea incrassata will eventually give way to a large fruit that looks like a large wooden marble, giving it the name the Marble Hakea!
Pungent and stunning! If going by its Latin name I guess you could call this the smooth dry grass Hakea 🤔 but no #Hakea lissocarpha commonly goes by honey bush or Ducks and drake Bush! It’s an easy one to spot this time of year covered in flowers this one thriving under the wandoo!
Is it a Hedgehog or Hakea 🤔 well of course it’s #Hakea erinacea! The Hedgehog Hakea, this spiny tall shrub comes into its best this time of year while not the brightest colour they do out in a spectacular show
#Hakea cristata putting on a winter show! A stunning species that love granite outcrops and lateritic soils! Flowering all through John Forest National Park atm! Commonly called the Snail Hakea, I guess cause of its fruits shape 🤷🏻♂️
A Cauliflower I wouldn’t wanna eat… #Hakea corymbosa, a common Hakea in the southwest that’s is hard to mistake with its dense production of flowers that look like a large Cauliflower, just a little spiky 😅
From Albany to Fitzgerald River National Park #Hakea cucullata can be found! An unusual species with shell like leaves in which the flowers sit, forming from the leaf axis, it is definitely a stand out shrub. It grows in sandy to gravelly soils this one was growing near Mt Manypeaks!
Blue is an unusual colour in the Proteaceae family, but #Hakea lehmanniana Meisn. definitely shows it off well! They also have a uniquely spiny seed pod, and terete leaves that’s are like nails! Spicy but stunning!! This one was growing happily in the stirling ranges!
#Hakea trifurcata (Sm.) R.Br.! This is commonly called the Two Leaved Hakea, for very cool reasons! Hakea are a fav for seed eating birds like Cockatoos, this species seed pods are small & green, so it’s evolved to sparsely form small round leaves that look like the pods to disguise the pods!
A common small shrub throughout the south west #Hakea incrassata R.Br. Known as the Marble Hakea due to its large round woody fruit! I really like the subtle colours of the flowers paired with the blueish green leaves 😍
The common name of #Hakea amplexicaulis R.Br. Is just a little too redundant, The Prickly Hakea, a name that could be put to a lot of Hakea. they are tho a stunning understory plant found throughout the southwest, , easy to identify with the large prickly amplexicaul leaves (base clasping the stem!)
