A sculptural pair of vintage 1950s handmade sterling silver geometric modernist cufflinks by California artist/silversmith Harold Fithian. Superb design of five raised bars of polished silver above oxidized (black) recesses. The silver bars taper wider from side to side, and then become a curve at the wider end which is also open at the back at that side! Deceptively simple design is actually quite complex when examined closely! Harold Fithian (1905-1972) was an all-American romantic figure - he was born and raised in Southern California - he studied acting with Edna Ames and worked on the back lot of Universal Studios in Hollywood in the 1920s - was a labor organizer and friend of Woody Guthrie in the 1930s and 40s - a well-known designer and metalsmith in the 1950s and 60s - and he is probably best known for his modernist style cufflinks and other mens jewelry. His work is quite rare in comparison with most other studio metalsmiths of the period, and it's getting harder and harder to find pieces by him! Each cufflink measures 7/8" across by 1/2" tall at fronts, and the pair weigh 13.4 grams total. Marked with Fithian maker mark "fi" also "Sterling" on swivelbacks. Excellent vintage condition.

a SCULPTURAL pair of vintage 1950s handmade sterling silver and pearl modernist Heart cufflinks by California artist/silversmith Harold Fithian. A sculptural and muscular dimensional design of an abstracted heart shape with a post-set 7mm cultured pearl off-center. Harold Fithian (1905-1972) was an all-American romantic figure - he was born and raised in Southern California - worked on the back lot of Universal Studios in Hollywood in the 1920s - was a labor organizer and friend of Woody Guthrie in the 1930s and 40s - a well-known designer and metalsmith in the 1950s and 60s - and he is particularly well-known for his modernist style cufflinks and other mens jewelry. His work is rare compared to most other studio modernist silversmiths, and his pieces are getting harder and harder to find! Each cufflink measures 3/4" by 1", and the pair weigh a hefty 14 grams total. Marked with his "Fi" maker mark, also marked "Sterling Plaque". ( "Sterling Plaque" means that the front part is solid sterling silver , and the swivel back section is silver-plated. Fithian used silver-plated brass for the swivelbacks because it was stronger and held up better in the long run.) Excellent vintage condition

a SUPERB pair of vintage 1950s one of a kind handmade sterling silver modernist cufflinks by American artist/metalsmith duo Irvin and Bonnie Burkee of Colorado. Entirely handmade deeply incised design that has been oxidized black to contrast with the polished silver surface surrounding it. No doubt a one of a kind pair as it's the only example that I have seen by them in my 45+ year career! The Burkee brand was born in Colorado, but they moved to Arizona in the 1970s where they remained for the rest of their lives.

These one of a kind wearable art cufflinks measure an impressive 7/8" by 7/8" at fronts, and the set weighs a substantial 0.8 ounce or roughly about 23 grams total. Marked as shown, "Burkee" and "Sterling". Excellent vintage condition
