Here's my Iowa Hawkeye football Offense Preview. Iowa is in for an interesting year on offense. Year two of Tim Lester's Shanahan-style offensive system and a new QB Mark Gronowski. Could Iowa actually have a good QB? It looks possible. #iowahawkeyes #hawkeyefootball

Iowa’s offense will take a step forward in 2025, largely due to Gronowski’s play-making abilities.

But the Hawkeyes have a difficult schedule that includes games against ISU, Indiana, Oregon, PSU and Neb.

In conclusion, Gronowski should be a significant upgrade at the QB position for the Iowa Hawkeyes.

His mobility and downfield passing ambitions should be a breath of fresh air for an offense and fanbase in desperate need of it.

Gronowski generates less EPA/Play and EPA/Pass than both King and Henigan, but does have a higher Yards/Completion and Explosive %.

Gronowski is a bit of a fusion of both King and Henigan. All three are:
- Good runners
- Put up good completion stats
- Avoid pressures and sacks

It’s probably fair to say Gronowski is a step below both King and Henigan, but that’s some solid company to be in.

Albeit in a much more dominant team, last season Gronowkski generated:
0.15 EPA/Play and 0.12 EPA/Pass rate
12.2 Yards/Completion
6.0 Explosive %

By comparison, McNamara generated:
-0.15 EPA/Play and -0.15 EPA/Pass rate
9.8 Yards/Completion
3.7 Explosive %

Using the Hudl IQ Player Comparison tool, we can see that Gronowski is much more of a threat as a downfield passer, creates over 1/3 more explosive plays and does a far better job at using his legs to both rush the ball and evade pressure. #HawkeyeFootball

Gronowski should be a major upgrade on McNamara.

Eye test: He's more athletic, has more mobility and is more ambitious with his downfield passing efforts.

His skill set should give this Hawkeye offense a boost, especially without Kaleb Johnson in the backfield.

During the 2024 season, Gronowski finished with 2,721 passing yards, 23 TDs, and 7 INTs. He completed just shy of 61% of his passes.

Cade McNamara, Iowa’s starting QB through eight games, finished with just 1,017 passing yards, 6 TDs and 5 INTs. He completed 60.5% of his passes. #HawkeyeFootball
