In this portrait, Mrs. Tanner is shown in a highly studied pose meant to look informal and casual. Tanner painted Jessie’s face with greater detail than her dress, which he painted in a loose, unfinished manner. #HenryOssawaTanner

This Tanner piece was one of those. Those greens? That impressionist hat(?) and wood(?). The complex repetition of colors across the piece? I'm stinkin' delighted I even came close. #dachshund #henryossawatanner

A warm, softly lit painting of an elderly Black man teaching a young Black boy how to play the banjo. They sit closely together in a modest wooden cabin, bathed in golden light from an unseen fire. The background features a simple table with a white cloth, a jug, and sparse furnishings. The scene conveys tenderness, wisdom, and the passing down of knowledge through generations.

Henry Ossawa Tanner’s The Banjo Lesson (1893) is more than paint on canvas—it’s a quiet act of defiance.

In a world that mocked and erased, Tanner captured warmth, legacy, and the dignity of Black life. A lesson passed down, a story still told.

Have y’all ever seen this painting? It’s fantastic. The shifting blues, the camels, I love everything about this. It was painted by Henry Ossawa Tanner back in 1925. The rest of his work is just as lovely. Such an artist! No wonder he became world famous. #HenryOssawaTanner #TheThreeWiseMen #Art

Shaft of vertical light to the far left, a bed, a teenaged girl in a plain robe sitting on the bed on the right. She looks nervous and resigned.

#HenryOssawaTanner artist. "The Annunciation" is interesting because it shows a Bible event differently. Other works are equally impressive. #BlackHistoryMonth

Painted during a triumphant visit home from Paris in 1897, Henry Ossawa Tanner’s portrait of his mother is both a tribute to Sarah Tanner—the central, stabilizing figure in her large and distinguished African American family—and a celebration of her son’s recent success in his chosen career, in which he had persevered despite initial opposition from his parents.

In its composition the work refers to a world-famous image by another American: James Abbott McNeill Whistler’s Portrait of the Artist’s Mother of 1871. Tanner’s portrait of his mother has none of the cool austerity of Whistler’s picture; instead it is an affectionate portrayal of a strong, sensitive, thoughtful personality.

Oil on canvas rendering in blues and reds of the destruction of sodom and Gomorrah. Three figures in the foreground, a pillar of salt behind, and a destroyed landscape in the background.

Back to work. Still have some hints of biblical scholarship in my day job.

In 1996, Tanner's painting "Sand Dunes at Sunset, Atlantic City" was the first by an African American artist to be acquired for the permanent collection of the White House.
