In @elpais.com, I developed a quantitative model showing that popular support for Morena is more closely linked to its labor policy than to its social programs β¬οΈ

Three people taking a selfie together at a wedding. THe bride is in the centre. A nearby light is giving a red glow over them. In the background, people are dancing.
Dr Kirst Banks, standing in her wedding dress for a photo. Posted to her Instagram account.
A small, hexagon tile with the name 'Rami Mandow' enscribed on it. Nearby, a test-tube filled with tea leaves.
A decoration from the wedding, lights and flowers hanging. The lights read the words "to the moon and back"
But, that didn't stop me from attending the beautiful wedding of our ultra-cute and awesome friends - Kirsten and Jamie. Her dress was AMAZING and sparked like a galaxy. It was a beautiful day/night out in the country - I got teary!
And yes, JWST-themed decor + test-tube tea!

black and white x-ray image of my ankle showing the bones around my foot and ankle region. This image is a view from side on.
black and white x-ray image of my ankle showing the bones around my foot and ankle region. This image is a view from almost front on.
Nine tile image of a foot scanned using an MRI. Each tile shows different internal components and organs likes bones, muscles, tendons.
Looking down at my legs from below the knees. On one foot is a regular shoe. On the other is a Moonboot to assist with my fractured ankle. It has a big red ball on the tongue of the boot that can be pumped to tighten the boot around the ankle.
Then, not so much a good highlight, but a significant event for me regardless was my ankle fracture in early-Nov.
Not painful, but it did put a big dent in my gym schedule and had me hopping around in a Moon-boot for a bit.
It sucked - but how neat is science to see inside me!

Looking out across the horizon over the city lights, where the night sky is filled with stars, the planet Venus, a faint comet and an aircraft trail. There is an inset of the comet, zoomed in. It shows the intricate details of the comet. Several objects in the image, such as the aircraft, Venus and Antares are also annotated.
A highlight from Sept. this year for me was *finally* getting to see/image Comet 2023 A3 (Tsuchinshan-ATLAS) after many, many attempts where the clouds ruined my plans, or the sky was too bright.
In a small 15-min window @deep-twilight.bsky.social and me got a few pics!

In @elpais.com, I published a quantitative analysis exploring who the last remaining PRI voters are.

Several vegan-based ingredients, including pasta, bolognese sauce, edamame beans, vegetable protein, yeast flakes.
A carton of high protein almond milk and a tub of so good dairy free vanilla bean ice cream next to it. On top of the tub is a box of mini oreo cookies. Next to them all is a bag of Golden Gaytime almond protein powder.
Also made a bit of a lifestyle change in terms of my diet in September, jumping from vegetarian to vegan. Took a little getting used to but now am in full swing and really enjoying it!
Added bonus was that since Sept., my cholesterol dropped 28% going back into the good range!

baby who was just born, sleeping against his motherβs chest. He is holding up one of his hands where he has extended his middle finger like he is giving a rude gesture.
Door sign for babies room with the word "Mason" on it and space objects like rockets, moons and stars illustrated
Baby in a crib, scrunching his face as he is crying
Baby, sitting down on a beach for the first time ever. He is staring off into the distance. He is wearing protective clothing and a hat.
But the best thing in September was the arrival of little Mason, my new nephew (sister's first kiddo).
One of his first gestures was giving the bird to the world. Made this uncle proud. And he's growing up real fast!
oh, and lemme tell you, the boy has a set of lungs on him!
#Highlights2024
Eight tile image showing a different galaxy in each tile. The galaxies come in a variety of shapes but are mostly spiral galaxy structures presenting either edge on or face on. Some galaxies have a dark dust lane intersecting their discs. The colour scheme here is natural so the galaxies look white/yellow.
Multiple tile image with an astrophotography of a different object in each. There are mostly nebulae but there are also a few galaxies. The nebula present as irregular or spherical gas clouds that are illuminated red and or green-blue. This is due to the elementary particles being excited by powerful sub radiation from nearby massive stars. Different elements give off different colours. The galaxies are sometimes nearly edge on or can be face on. They are mostly spiral structures with dark dust lanes visible.
Post-conference season, August and early September (our late winter) was a good time to get stuck into writing my first paper (ongoing still!) which was/is a bit stressful. Countered the stress with some astrophotography - with all my images being captured using SeestarS50.

Two people standing and smiling, looking towards the camera and taking a selfie.
and in London, got to also finally catch up in person with @drcarpineti.bsky.social which was nice! Soho in Summer is a bit of fun!
#Highlights2024
Man standing on rocks with hands in pockets. In background a smouldering volcano cone.
Looking out towards a smouldering volcano cone where a column of white smoke rises
But a fantastic highlight from being in Sicily (besides gelato!) was getting up close to Etna ... we were allowed up to 2900m only (summit: 3350m) as the Volcano erupted three days prior and then again a couple days later!
I was hoping to have been in Taormina to see an eruption!

Looking back at a bay with colourful buildings built into the cliffs
Looking down across a coastline where a peninsula stands out with colourful buildings built upon it
Looking out across a bay to a couple of small hills covered in trees. The bay is full of parked boats.
Looking out across a picturesque bay that has a small island and several small beaches with turquoise blue waters
Hubby and I went hiking in Cinque Terre for a few days which was great, spent a couple days in Portofino, then onto Sicily, with a few days in Palermo, and then Taormina. Such a big difference between the two Sicilian locations - both enjoyable in their own way.

Two men, standing next to each other, on a bridge in Vence. Behind them is a canal with residential buildings on either side.
Two men taking a selfie together. One man wears sunglasses, the other a hat. They are both on a boat on a canal in Venice.

Continuing on with my month in Italy, in July my bestie Eric joined me in Venice, as did hubby, and we had several days there. It was full of tourists but I loved seeing it again.
The massive gelato intake started here. By the end of that fortnight, I had spent AUD$100+ on gelato.

Man wearing a cap and smiling at the camera while raising hand in a peace sign. In the background is a picturesque Jew of mountains.
Looking out towards a few jagged snow capped mountains with green meadows and rolling green hills in the foreground
Looking out across a small lake towards a few jagged snow capped mountains with green meadows and rolling green hills in the foreground
Looking out across an auditorium to a screen where a title page is showing that says: βThe discovery of pulsars - a graduate studentβs tale. Jocelyn Bell Burnellβ
And for the second week, we were up in the Dolomites for the IPTA conference week - which is where we had so many fantastic talks and activities.
Not to mention, it's a beautiful part of Italy!
I was surprised (and delighted) at the strong German influence in this region.
#Highlights2024
A speaker in the front of a class room at a university giving a lecture with a graphic that shows different frequencies and timescales of gravitational waves and their sources
Looking down a picturesque canal with shops and people on either side
Four tile image. In the top image, which is the largest, it shows the restaurant entry and name on the building facade. The bottom three images are food shots with the first a captures salad, the second a risotto and the third berries with ice cream. There is a small bread basket and a glass of red wine in the background.
Five tile image showing plate of pasta, a tub of ice cream and several glasses of bright orange and yellow aperol spritz drinks
The first week was student week in Milano, which was excellent from a learning perspective but also so awesome to meet other IPTA students in person for the first time.
We also had amazing food. And lots of aperol/limoncello spritz!
I really liked Milan!
#Highlights2024
A man standing next to a woman posing for a photo. The woman is Dame Prof. Jocelyn Bell Burnell, who discovered pulsars, and the man is me. Behind us are people lining up in a queue.
I was so lucky that I got to spend a month in Italy in June-July, as we had our pulsar timing conference there for the first two weeks of that month.
Probably the *biggest* highlight for me this year was meeting Dame Prof. Jocelyn Bell Burnell, and giving my talk in front of her π₯Ήπ₯Ή
#Highlights2024
Four tile image. On the left is a tall vertical selfie image of me holding a thumbs up. On the right, the screen is split into three tiles, showing the view from the room of the conference with people sitting in chairs and looking at the screen whilst I give a talk.
Two tile image. In both images, there are a group of people posting for the camera in group shots.
Looking out across a hilly region with trees casting long shadows as the Sun rises over the ridge producing a diffuse light that is dispersed through some light clouds.
Image captured by a Seestar telescope of a bright green comet, nestled amongst many background stars
I also gave a science talk (remote) in May at the Australia-ChinA ConsortiuM for Astrophysical Research event on my pulsar research.
And of course, spending the weekend away in Mudgee with the friend-fam for my b'day. Saw a comet too!
May was a very busy, but excellent month!

A group of people sitting on stairs that are descending. There are three people sitting per step and they are all looking towards the camera and smiling for the group shot. Surrounding them are green patches of grass and a tall glass building behind them. The words "SciComm Collider 2 - Perimiter Institute' are annotated on the image.
Five tile image showing several locations and rooms of the Perimeter Institute. In one image we can see outside onto a grass section and a river beyond this: in another there is a chalk board with equations on it and some food in buffet trays nearby. In one image there is a group of people huddled around. In the last image there is a man writing words and equations on a chalk board.
A man carrying a back pack and standing out the front of a building called the Perimeter Institute for theoretical physics. He is smiling and raising one hand with a thumbs up.
A woman and a man taking a selfie in front of the Perimeter Institute building entrance. Both are smiling. The man is wearing sunglasses.
One of my fav events this year was @astrokatie.com #SciCommCollider2 event at Perimeter Institute. Learned so much!
Got to hang out with such cool folks like @particleclara.bsky.social @planet4589.bsky.social @patchenbarss.bsky.social @mattstrassler.bsky.social + more!

Three tile image. Top two images feature a man hugging a woman and both are smiling and on the street. The bottom image is both of them sitting at a restaurant eating dinner. In front of them are plates of food.
Looking up from the base of the Toronto tower towards its circular observation deck. Nearby, in the sky, is the Sun and a ring of shadow circling it. The clouds are thin and whispy
global map showing the hemisphere with the Pacific ocean. A solid blue line connects Toronto in the top right with Parkes in the bottom left of the globe. Several other cities and the date line are also annotated.
pulsar profile showing flux density vs pulse phase plot, with data forming a central, narrow peak that is surrounded by smaller, shoulder peaks. The pulse profile structure is located in the centre of the pulse phase.
May this year was a packed month of fun! Got to visit Canada for the first time, catching up with my long-term friend Jen in Toronto.
Even ran a pulsar observation with Murriyang from 15,700km away from the telescope - my most northern observation ever!

An Egyptian Pharisees coffin made of wood and standing upright inside a glass case.
The other thing that I was extremely excited about in April was getting to see the coffin of Ramses II - the priceless artefact came to Sydney (2nd city in the world outside Cairo, ever) from Egyptβs Supreme Council of Antiquities. We were so lucky.
This was a wonderful exhibition.

Two tile image features two vertical tiles. The first on the left is a wide angle shot of a spiral galaxy. It is small and resides within a dense star field. On the right is the zoomed in version, looking closer at Galaxy. An annotated arrow points to a white star which is the supernova.
Five vertical narrow tiles, each showing a zoomed in section of an astrophotograph of a spiral galaxyβs edge. There is an arrow annotated to one of the bright stars in the galaxy which is the supernova on each of these images.
A cool celestial firework (a supernova!) went off in NGC 3621, - a galaxy ~22 million light-years away - in April of this year, and lots of folks from around the world turned their telescopes to catch it.
It was very bright, even through small apertures.
I tracked it for months!

Six tile image showing four galaxies and two nebulae. The galaxies are spiral and at inclined viewing angles.
But I really longed for the dark, clear, crisp Atacaman night skies, and every night we were there it got cloudy. One night even rained! The driest place on Earth was trolling me!
Until the last night .... when I literally stayed away all night with the Seestar.
Heaven.

Man standing chest deep in a lake looking at camera and wearing hat. In the background, another man floats on his back.
Plate subduction below the Andes creates a wall of Volcanoes and geothermal hotspots to visit in the Atacama, it was really such a geekgasm for me.
The other fun thing was swimming (floating?) in the salt lakes, and spotting ALMA's basecamp facility.

Man on a mountain bike on a dirt track with a large volcano looming in the background
Four tile image showing different angles and views of a cone volcano which has a snow capped peak
Post-Patagonia and in early Feb, we headed north to the driest place on Earth, the Atacama Desert.
Upon arrival it was cloudy, so couldn't see much. But the next day, the skies cleared and I was a very happy chap in the presence of Volcanoes like Licancabur.
Obsessed even!
