Home Cauldron Page but Mirabel is challenging the hag in a match of YU-GI-OH. "Draw your last pathetic card so I can end this, hag." "My grandpa's deck has no pathetic cards, Mirabel. But it does contain the unstoppable Exodia! Exodia, obliterate!"

My marketing team told me that Home Cauldron isn't relatable enough for readers, so I decided to make drastic changes to the formula to reach a wider audience.

Suddenly, a shock jolted through her body. She gasped for air, blood spitting out of her mouth. Something warm poured on her palm through the wave of cold. She looked at her hand, then down at her stomach. Blood. It painted her pale palm and the silver-adorned dagger that pierced her chest right in the middle in rich crimson hues. “What? Why?” The words escaped her lips silently. She could feel a dark grasp reaching out to her. Like maggots, they crawled up her and sucked away all the warmth and heat of the flames, and the world slowly faded into darkness. “I… I don’t feel so good.” She managed to muster out through her fading breath, and as the tear drop rolled off her cheek, everything went dark.

The golden light drowned the table. As the beams of light reached for the skies, so too did the woman’s arms lift like a marionette’s. Her grin split wide, and as the formless words began slithering past her lips, the night sky burst into flame. Mirabel watched in terror as the pillars of fire reached out for the night, where three stars looked down upon them in brilliant sheen. The unbearable heat that erupted from nothingness burned so hot that even the moon itself began melting, its silver surface dripping into strands of mercury. Then the woman’s echoes coalesced into being, and the depth of her murmurs resonated into the night: “Deep within the cracks of time, the slumbering sister awakens, and the stars begin life anew. In flame, will you bathe, and from the embers will an old promise rekindle. And there it will all end where it started. Solemnly, as the stars weep and dusk alone bears witness. As steel and flame clash in the crucible of a new world, with the guilt of sin and a heart everbright.”

Maybe she wasn't a con artist? That, or maybe she was even better than what Mirabel gave her credit for.

The woman flinched, the akarta slipping through her fingers as if they were paralysed by venom. Mirabel’s eyes trailed the falling card, and as its corner hit the table, she could feel the aether flow around her like a dry, hot gust of air. The citrine trims lit up like candles, and the old lady’s voice echoed with deep resonance that was far removed from her high-pitched cackling. “Yes, o’ night…” she said, her voice echoing in the room with a low murmur. Depicted on the card were 8 people of different origins, engulfed in a golden flame, and all stared at the sky where the flame first erupted. She knew the story well, as did everyone. The Fouding Flame. She could feel her blood pumping as the woman’s voice deepened further. “Heed my words…”

It was a story that everyone knew by heart. The story of the gift of flame; the tale of The Founding Flame.

Mirabel gave the woman an impish look. ”Well, let’s hear it then, old hag! I hope Ikitar has some good fortune in store for me! Maybe I will stumble upon some stunning noble lady who offers me her hand and half the kingdom?” she sneered. The blue-cloaked woman cackled with a wide grin, and her teeth shone in the candle-lit tent as she laid the deck of cards on the table. “Seers tend to be an eccentric lot. Interpreting the threads of time is a cryptic form of magic, and they use peculiar mediums to better concentrate on it. Hers was a deck of Akarta with a citrine trim. Goes well with getting swindled, or so I thought.” The woman reached the velvety cards with her rough, pale-furred fingers. She flipped the card on the table with a single snappy motion, and she let out a chuckle. “The Minstrel. Herald of adventurous souls, creative minds, and visionaries,” she said as she looked down at the picture of a singing bard elegantly painted on the bone paper with gold and black ink. “Or perhaps foreshadowing greater events yet to come…” She flipped another card. “Ahh, the Lady of Fate. Many seek Ikitar’s wisdom and guidance, yet only a few are ever blessed by her light. She must have great things in store for you…” Mirabel looked down at the cards with her eyes half-lidded. “Whoa… Riveting…” she said with an impassive tone. But as the woman began reaching for the third and final card, something in the air lifted. “I was beginning to believe it was a mistake…” The pale hag’s golden eyes widened from beneath her dark cover, lighting, and swirling up with awe as she looked down upon the last Akarta. “…and to be fair, maybe it was.”

(Editor's note: It is actually riveting despite Mirabel's conspicuous skepticism)

Mirabel pulls open the curtain to the shady tent. Its shady interior is only lit with an assortment of candles and baubles emitting a magical light. Despite its meager outward appearance, the interior holds within it a set of equipment that rivals even a more established witch’s study. “I was curious I could not lie. My mentor was a reflection witch, so I wasn’t easily impressed by some cheap parlour tricks. But there was something about it. Something about those words that drew me like a moth to a flame.” She glances around the tent until her eyes land on a robed figure and her deck of cards which she shuffles with ominous determination. “Good.” the woman says with squeaky age rasped voice. “It is wise not to mute one’s mind to the murmurs of fate. To not stray blindly into the dark.” She continues as the candlelight shines upon her robes and that are adorned by a silver. She grins. Like the night sky, her robes frame her long pale muzzle peeking from withing the dark covers of her hood, and she opens her mouth again and continues: “So, I ask you again, young witch. Care to witness what lies in the path of stars? To listen to the whispers of the Star Mother and what she has woven in the endless bed of night?”

“Psst! You there young lady...” A voice calls to her as Mirabel is strolling around the populated marketplace. “What now...?” she says turns around to see where the sound originates. It’s hard to see but Mirabel manages to catch a glimpse of the shady figure inside a tent. The pale furred figure flicks a purple card with bright yellow etchings. A trail of golden magic follows the card’s movements as the woman speaks to her again with an old and gnarly voice: “Care to witness what the stars have in store for you?” she says. Mirabel looks at the small tent set up in the alleyway for a moment. Like a robe with dark blue trims and snowy fabric it stands in the vacant dim alleyway. Underneath the hood that covers the spindle, a silver crescent decorates the tent like a head of a figure. The brooch, too made of silvery metal, shines against rogue rays of light piercing into the alley. Mirabel sighs: “I’ll pass” she says frustratedly. “I prefer to worry about my future tomorrow.” The innards of the snowy tent illuminate, lighting up the back street with warm golden light. “How about your dreams then, Mirabel?” the woman says with an ominous tone and her words are enough to fully draw in the intrigue of Mirabel. ‘How does she know my name?’

“I’ll go looking for some exotic herbs. I’ll catch up with you at the foot of the Old Rowan when I’m done!” Erika says. “Alright, sounds great! See you soon!” Mirabel replies as Erika fades into a crowd of people. The market is like nothing Mirabel had seen before. Stalls, people, common and exotic goods of all kinds. Delicious smells of fresh bakery goods, shiny metal swords and knick-knacks, vibrant cloths of all colors and designs. “I had never seen so many people in my life. So many things to try. So many things to see. It was almost overwhelming. But there was one thing I was really after”, the text boxes read. As she strolls past the tents and stalls, a voice yells at her from a caravan: “You there! I can spot a spark wielder from a mile away!” the voice of a man yells. She looks to the lavishly decorated purple caravan. “Welcome young ferin miss!” the human with dark complexion dressed in a flamboyant purple and blue suit yells from behind the counter. “Looking to buy some of Utu’s exquisite magestones?” he asks as the shine of a beautifully cut red quartz piece shines against the sunshine.

I'm very busy atm with lots of other mandatory projects so to not burn myself out, I'll be making pages with less strict deadlines. I'll finish chapter 2 with this irregular timetable and figure out a new way to have a better schedule starting with chapter 3!

Erika smiles. ”Well anyways, we’re here!” she says. “Welcome to Rowanill Mirabel!” Mirabel gasps, her eyes widening and ears spiking up in excitement. The grand rowan tree stands tall in the middle of the square, twisted around its own trunk, stretching out its branches and berries to the far side of the market. The wooden buildings framing the grand rowan tree are decorated with carefully crafted red painted timber frames and their mismatched walls are raised upon crumbled stone bases. The yard is filled with stalls and wagons with tarps all in plentiful and lively colors. People are wandering around and spending time conversing, perusing the varied collection of goods for sale, or simply just enjoying the warmth of the late summer morning.

”So Mirabel, have you ever been to Rowanill before?” Erika asks and glances over to Mirabel. “No, never. I have to say I’m quite excited!” Mirabel responds gleefully. “Well, you’re in luck then as the caravan market just so happens to be in the town today!” Erika responds with a smile. “Lots of travelers come here often?” Mirabel asks. Erika lowers her gaze, and her voice shifts into a subtle but still noticeable solemn tone: “Well, not as many as I heard used to. The thick woods make travel difficult and risky for large caravans. But I think many still avoid the place because of its, well, history.” The two women approach the town gates. Beautifully crafted rich woodwork embellishes the stone structures. Bright red trims with splashes of white paint frame the gate and the 10-meter stone watchtower. But despite the quality of the tower, its brother lies crumbled, barely holding the gate together and it too only barely held together by makeshift scaffolding. Two guards stand under the gate in colors similar to the trimmed gate bridge and inside the gates, a stableboy is harnessing a three horned kaurin stallion ready for travel. There is a text box which reads: “At the time I didn’t know of the events that took place in Rowanill during the Avelonian civil war, though it was clear from the first glance that even decades later the place hadn’t fully let go of that night.”

Mirabel and Erika are walking on a quiet forest path. In front of a large old oak is a sun scorched post with a sign that reads Rowanill. ”So Erika, how long have you lived here?” Mirabel asks. “Around four years. My mentor had a summer retreat here which he sold to me after my apprenticeship”, Erika responds. “I take it you are not around these parts then?” Mirabel adds in which Erika responds “No, I’m from Vinen.” Mirabel’s ears zap up in excitement and her eyes glow up. “No way! Across the sea?” she shouts. “I’ve always wanted to see the golden prairies, the endless vineyards, the coastal cities! It all must be amazing!” she says enthusiastically before her excitement fades. “But why would you come here out of all places? It’s not like Avelon is a great place for witches.” Mirabel then asks. Erika smiles. “Oh, Vinen is lovely in its own way for sure! But when I came here for the first time, I just fell in love with this place. There is just something about the atmosphere, the seasons, all this!” she says and gestures around her. The old stone bridge crosses a blue stream and all around them greenery new and old surrounding them in multitude, all bathing in the golden rays of sunrise.

Mirabel snaps out of her thoughts with a tear dripping down her cheeks as she looks towards the sound. She smiles and wipes away the tears. “Coming!” she yells. Mirabel opens the door, the soft morning light illuminating her and her nightgown, one barely posed in a way to cover her body. “Good morning, Erika!” she says as she sees her friend waiting for her. “Good morning, Mirabel” Erika responds, her emerald locks glistening in the light. “Are you ready to g- I- ummm…” she says, but her words get tangled up as she sees Mirabel. She shyly looks away. “Sorry I didn’t realize you were still getting dressed!” she says. Mirabel’s head tilts. “Still getting dressed? What do you me-“ she says in a confused tone but as she looks down on her apparel, it is not her usual robes but her nightgown. She screams in embarrassment and slams the door behind her. “Oh my god I’m sorry be right back!” she yells. Erika chuckles “Heh, no rush! I’ll wait here.”

”Huh?” Mirabel turns around after a thump coming from outdoors. “What was that?” She opens Home Cauldron’s front door to the early morning sun and looks down. “A newspaper?” She scans the view down the road and around the yard, but no-one is there. She looks up and her gaze is caught on a figure in the sky. An aven courier. His earthy plumes and bright tunic, otherwise tightly wrapped around him, has a strand of a ribbon floating in the wind. His carrier bag swinging loosely behind him with letters poking through as he waves at Mirabel. Mirabel waves back from the ground and heads back inside tossing the paper on the kitchen table. “I didn’t order anything… I hope I don’t have to pay for this” she thinks to herself. Front page of the Harima Journal has a large headline: “CARAVAN RAIDS ON RISE! Traders and travelers on high alert”.

"AAAAH!" The screams echo in the small round upstairs bedroom as Mirabel jolts up. The tranquility of early morning light fills the room with a soft haze as Mirabel sits up, holding her violet blanket close to her chest. "Ugh... What a horrible nightmare. Crazy how real that all felt." she says to herself as the dream lets go of her thoughts. She gets out of her bed. Her paws digging into the warmth of her blanket that rests halfway to the floor. “Gods how early is it?” she says, still dazed by the abruptness of her awakening. “I could’ve sworn I slept way past our trip to Rowanill.” She gets up from her bed and grabs her thin indigo nightgown. “Well, I might as well get up now. Erika did say she’s a morning person.” She says as she slips on the silky soft robe barely long enough to rest on her backside. “Me? Not so much. But at least I had made sure last night to have my coffee pot ready for the morning” the text box says as she is holding up a floral-patterned blue porcelain mug with white stalks and light pink flowers. The steam of freshly brewed coffee floating in the air with an aroma familiar to her.

Mirabel looks to the crimson sky. Flames engulf the sky painting the oily black horizon into vivid oranges and reds. Against the blinding light of the sea of flames, three bright stars shine through and among them an hole dark like the void devouring a moon.

"Mirabel..." The strange voice grows louder. Crackles spark under her feet as her claws dig into a marble floor under a thin layer of water. Like oil it glitters against the endless backdrop of a starlit sky. Countless rows of marble walkways and statues, litter the landscape in physically impossible orientations. "Who goes there?!" Mirabel yells as she turns around to the direction of the voice. The voice responds in the same calm and soft tone: "Come..." Mirabel's agitation quickly turns into confusion and dread, as she turns around. Her bright purple eyes reflecting the flames. "Wh- What?!" She yelps out in terror.

First "real" page of the second chapter of Home Cauldron but this time the scene looks a bit- different?

Page 15. Erika smiles enthusiastically in the cozily lit room. "Only one more thing remains!" She says. "The most important part for any witch with a new home, which is of course naming your home!" Mirabel strokes her chin in contemplation. The fireplace crackles in the kitchen, its flames playfully licking the hanging cauldron. "I think I got just the name for it!" Mirabel then says. The crescent moon lights up Mirabel's homestead, fireflies zipping in the still night. The moonlight bounces off from the wooden plaque, shaped like a cauldron and decorated with a small brass insignia with a purple heart in its center right above the name: Home Cauldron.

At last, the day ends and so does the first chapter of HC! I had a rough end of spring and an upcoming move so unfortunately I had fallen behind in my page schedule. However, Home Cauldron chapter 2 will return after a short break!

Page 14. The evening has set over Harima. Mirabel's new home is cozily lit by candle lights and a purple aether bulb. It gently lights up the couch where exhausted Mirabel and Erika sit. "Phew! I'm exhausted... I couldn't have done it without you though. Thanks for the help Erika!" Mirabel says with a relieved sigh. "Oh don't mention it!" Erika responds with a gentle smile. "Though I must admit it was a bit more work than I first envisioned it to be." she continues. Mirabel gives a wide grin and chuckles. "Haha yeah sorry 'bout that! Next time I'll get a house that hasn't been abandoned for decades." The kitchen is lit with a gentle orange hue from the candles. Erika's giftbox lays neatly on the table: a wooden handmade bowl with freshest common and some exotic fruits. "Then again this house does have some very cozy charm to it that newer houses don't have!" Erika says. "Yeah I guess you're right! And not to mention what a bargain it was. To be honest, I expected it to be quite the shady shagshack for the price I paid for it. But as it turns out, it just needed a bit of love." Mirabel responds and lets out an another relieved sigh with a smile. "But again, thanks for the help and the housewarming gift!"

The only thing missing for ultimate coziness is a bottle of wine.

Page 12. Mirabel stares at the pile of stuff she has brought with her for a moment and then says: "Well I guess having some help wouldn't hurt. It is a lot of manual labor after all. And I guess if you really don't mind it, then sure!" The two begin their task, cleaning, moving stuff, unpacking and scrubbing. Even Pupu is helping. Afterall, who better to take care of the bag of treats.

Page 11. "So you are a witch as well then!? Gosh I haven't ever met a witch who wasn't an old hag! Judging by your attire, I take it you do gardening for a job or a hobby?" Mirabel asks, excited to learn more of her new colleague. "Both actually!" Erika responds. "I've been working as a herbalist for a few years now. You know, the usual: brewing potions, rising herbs, making salves. I'm lucky enough to do it for a living! Also there isn't a full-time doctor in Rowanill so I sometimes try to help the people to the best of my abilities." She explains. Erika glances at the kitchen, now filled with bags and crates. "Speaking of helping. I was wondering if I could help with any of this? It's quite the work for one person and you don't seem to have any conjuring circles set up yet either. So I would happily help you to make this place feel like home!" She says. Mirabel scratches her head, embarrassed to accept such an offer from someone she just met. "Oh no you really don't have to-" she begins but is immediately interrupted by Erika's enthusiasm. "Nonsense! Of course I'll help! I insist!"

Page 10. Pupu inhales deep the rich aromas of Erika's herbalist apron. His eyes water and with a loud CHOOOOH, he expels his magical energy across the room straight at Erika. "PUPU!" Mirabel yells as Erika covers her face from the sneeze, leaving only a cloud of pink, blue and purple smoke from his wake. Mirabel scratches her head in embarrassment. "Sorry about the mess.. He is a bit of a goofball..." She says. "Nah, don't worry about it! That's what aprons are for." Erika says wiping the sparkly goo out of her clothes with her right hand. "If anything, I should've changed into something more presentable for the visit," she continues. Mirabel laughs. "Haha nonsense, don't you worry about that! If you think that is bad, I must look like a scarecrow from my trip here!" She says and gestures towards the kitchen chair with her open palm. "But please, just have a seat!"

What good are aprons if they couldn't handle a bit of a mess? :)

Page 9. "Wait, what? Decades??" Mirabel asks as she parses what Erika just said. Erika looks at her, surprised that Mirabel wasn't aware. "Didn't they tell you when you bought the house? The last person to live here did so over half a century ago." Mirabel looks at her new friend confused and worried. "So wait, how is this place still standing? You don't suppose that riverfolk lady sold me a house that is ready to collapse at any moment?!" she asks not sure if to be angry or not. "She is very serious about her family business. I don't think she would ever under the god's prying eyes sell a house without inspecting it first." Erika says with calmness enough to infect even Mirabel. She hesitates for a moment. "You know her then?" Mirabel finally asks. "Her nephew is a long time friend of mine." Erika responds. "So you'd take her word for it then?" "Absolutely!" Erika says with enough confidence to let Mirabel's doubts wash away. A bell clings and jingles from the dark corners of the dusty living room. It grows louder and faster with each step before turning into a curious meow. Erika looks at Pupu with awe and excitement. "Well hello there! Who is this distinguished gentleman?" she asks squatting down to greet the fellow. "Oh he is my familiar Pupu!" Mirabel responds. "Hello Pupu! I'm Erika" The cat curiously approaches the new face, drawn to exotic smells of her apron. "I always wished I had one! Magically affine companions are such a rarity not many see one in their whole lifetime." Erika says.

Page 8. "It's been the talk of the whole town ever since the rumors spread that someone bought the old witch's hut here at Greenbrook!" The equinae woman says. Her hair glistening in the sunlight like made of strands of emeralds and jades. "And I must say I've been looking forward to meet you! Witches are few and far between so it's always great to see a new face!" Her excitement is apparent to Mirabel as she doesn't get a chance to return the gesture before the woman continues yet again: "Oh dear, I did just ramble on without really introducing myself didn't I? Sorry! I'm just so excited that I forgot my manners! My name is Erika!" The woman says offering her hand. A heartfelt moment for Mirabel as she recollects her younger years, watching outside from the window while her mentor was entertaining guests. She lifts up her finger to light a small ball of flame out in the rain to warm a mossfrog resting on the windowsill. "I had never met any young witches before. I had never met anyone I could really call my friend. Sure I had met my fair share of witches, but only some old associates of my mentor. Even if I was lonely, at least it was the first place I could call home. I had that childish dream that one day someone would just waltz in and be my friend. So when that day finally came, I cherished it." she thinks as her muzzle turns into a gentle yet enthusiastic smile. "Mirabel! Pleased to meet you!" she yells out excitedly as she reaches for Erika's handshake. The two enter the house. "This is it! As you can see it's a tad messy but other than that, it has potential!" Mirabel says. "Ooh so this is what it looks like from the inside!" Erika says awed with the sight that finally reveals its secrets to her after spending a long time imagining what the oddball hut held inside. "Peculiar isn't it? Cannot say I've often seen houses built like this!" Mirabel adds, gesturing her guest to step inside. "It's in a significantly better shape than what I envisioned. And a lot cuter to boot! Which makes me wonder how it's in such a good shape after decades of no-one living in it..." Erika says.

Page 7. Mirabel picks up the painting from the wall. It's old, dust has caught on the torn pieces of the canvas. It depicts two young ferins, one blonde vulpine not too dissimilar to her, the other a charcoal feline with white lobsided hair. They are maybe a few years older than she. They are happily posing in front of a road with lanterns over the winding path zig-zagging from one side to another pattern. Dressed for the occasion, whatever that might be. The vulpine ferin with a red dress with white pleats and a floaty salmon mantle. The other with a shorter blue dress and vibrant golden sashes. It oozes of melancholy. Maybe it is because it being torn and forgotten. Mirabel sits there gazing at the painting. A figure is approaching the door. A knock. Mirabel snaps out of her zone. She opens the door. A cheerful emerald haired white furred equinae woman with a brown apron, blue short dress and a little satchel with a pink cheery ribbon on top greets her. "Hello! I heard from the townsfolk that a new witch was supposed to move in today! So I made sure to be the first to mee my new colleague!"

Page 6. She looks around her new home. "Honestly, I was expecting a totally rundown shack but luckily the house was mostly outrun by spiders and dust. Sure there was a lot to do but at least it had more than reasonable set of necessities for a woman like me" she thinks to herself, glancing at the rather well equipped kitchen with a proper pump sink and the fireplace fit for a cauldron. Not even that, but the best part is that the house seems to be already furnished. She explores the living quarters, approaching a stairway leading to what is probably the bedroom until something catches her eye. A torn painting. "Though I had my fair share of questions like why would someone leave behind expensive things such as a velvet couch let alone something as personal as a portrait."
