Jesus!
#HurricaneMelissa has strengthened into a Category 5 storm heading to #Jamaica,
with winds 160 to 195 miles per hour.
This level of destruction is comparable to #HurricaneAndrew in #Florida, 1992.
If you can, please evacuate! 🤷‍♀️
it’s not safe to stay in its path.

32 years since infamous Cat 5 #HurricaneAndrew hit south of Miami in Homestead FL. I had only been at my new role as a broadcast meteorologist for a year, following my time at the National Weather Service. It was the strongest & most devastating hurricane on record to hit southern FL.

This visible satellite imagery of #HurricaneAndrew from @NWSMiami is so fascinating. Because the images are only available from sunrise to sunset, it really makes Andrew look like a thief in the night, doing its damage when no one can see.

30 years ago this afternoon, South Floridians were digesting @BMaxMayfield’s 5 PM #HurricaneAndrew advisory. The “EXTREMELY DANGEROUS” storm was 240 miles west of Miami and packed 150 MPH winds as it lashed the Bahamas. The short time to prepare was already drawing to a close.
