She was founder of the influential all-women rock group the Runaways and went on to form the group Joan Jett and the Black Hearts. In the late 1970s, when disco deteriorated into formulaic beeps and toots, Jett’s voice and her hard-driving guitar and lyrics injected new life into pop music that sorely needed it. It’s because of Joan Jett that Gen Xers can also say, “I love rock and roll.”
