Imperial Theater Augusta, GA. Analogue photography. 1979 "The Hitter" is on the marquee, which was released in 1979 and thus confidently dates the photo. Located at 749 Broad St., the theater opened in 1917 as The Wells Theater, and was killed by the Spanish Flu pandemic and the closure of public venues. Sold to Lynch Enterprises, along with several other local theaters, it reopened as The Imperial. It closed in 1981 and was reopened in 1985 as a performing arts venue. I've always called it the Imperial Palace, which I guess is wrong. Damn. I liked it being The Imperial Palace. Love the street lamp. With so many photos, looking at them I can plug into the moment I took the picture, not the day or the hour but the seconds surrounding when I took the photo. With this one I "feel" it was Sunday. Broad Street was already pretty well emptied out by 1979, but a reason for it being this sparse is because it was Sunday. I never saw "The Hitter". The theater is still there. One can look it up in Google Maps. * * * * * Photo is black-and-white looking down a side street toward the Imperial Theater on Broad.
