Wanted to update y'all: ideally, I'd like to review 1 more book for #IndiePressMonth ; however, it's most likely that I won't have the time to since I'll be at a con for a week starting on Wed. To those who sent me a book, fear not! It will still be reviewed, just not in March.

A picture with a dark red, gothic background with the text, “Bez Reviews Independent Books: #IndiePressMonth.” Beneath the text is my (Bez’s) mascot character Dogwater, a cat alien who has black fur on his right side, and cream-colored fur on his left side. The inside of his ears are purple, as are the leaf-shaped antenna sticking out of his head. His face is a TV screen that is currently displaying a triangle split in half with the word “Norbez” written on it. On the right side is the cover of Awaken, My Love: a dark-skin man with short brown hair and red eyes possessively carries a man with light skin and fair hair. The red-eyed man’s features are highlighted by the moon in the window behind his head, and he glares at the viewer, as if we are going to try and snatch up his love. The title of the book has pomegranates positioned around it, and behind those are taut chains.

It’s another #IndiePressMonth review! Continuing from a short story I reviewed from the TORMENT anthology, we have Awaken, My Love, a debut by @maratearendel.bsky.social about a moody vampire and the man who saves him.

Life Before Dolphins Check out Life Before Dolphins - A hybrid and moving novel mixing history, memoir, and fiction that speaks to universal themes of family, immigration, and history.
Awarded a fellowship at the New York Public Library, our narrator, Uribe, reflects on his life as an antimilitarist in the Basque Country, while researching the Hungarian activist and pacifist Rosika Schwimmer. As Uribe uncovers Rosika's purpose in World War I, he struggles to understand his own ambitions as a migrant in a new country. The narrative weaves myth, personal history, and the forgotten story of a stateless feminist into a meditation on crossing borders--geographical, emotional, and historical. Formally bold, the novel blends an unfinished manuscript, a pandemic letter, and even a TikTok video, speaking to a moment when questions of migration, gender equality, and historical memory feel increasingly urgent.
Evocative and genre-blurring, Life Before Dolphins is a celebration of resilience, imagination, and the secret language of those who choose to live softly in a hard world. by Kirmen Uribe and Megan McDowell on Bookshop.org US!

My first review of #IndiePressMonth is TORMENT: A GOTHIC ANTHOLOGY! This gothic, gay-as-hell collection of short stories, curated by @ardentgrove.bsky.social , has quite the variety. Should you pick it up? (Hint: yes!)

Independent Publishers to Check Out During Indie Press Month March 2026 marks the third annual Indie Press Month. This collaboration between the Independent Publishers Caucus and The Independent Bookseller was developed to promote books published by presses other than the "Big Five" companies (Penguin Random House, Macmillan, Simon & Schuster, Hachette, and HarperCollins). While you're strolling through the shelves of your library or local bookstore, keep an eye out for books from indie presses this month.

Happy Indie Press Month! Here's a list to help you get started on reading books from independent publishers...
