If it includes large pieces of equipment essential to safe and proper lab function = DEVASTATION! Medical research requires expensive equipment to be viable and safe. You can't do this stuff out of a garage!

What do the cuts to #NIH #indirectcosts mean? Science is a lot like trying to make a cake. Direct costs cover the ingredients and bakers, but indirects cover everything else: oven, bowl, spoons, electricity, the building, dishwasher, etc. You can’t make a cake without covering both. #SupportResearch
Our institute spends $60,000 per year on pipette calibration. Labs worldwide rely on small volume precision to ensure research in, say, medical diagnostics and treatment, is done accurately and reproducibly. These crucial pipette calibrations are paid by the #indirectcosts of doing science.

Claims say institutions take 60%+ in overhead. The truth? I ran the numbers: due to MTDC exclusions (equipment, subcontracts, etc.), the actual IDC return at WSE was 36%—not 60%+.
