Today is the 250th anniversary of Jane Austen's birth, and I couldn't let it pass without saying how much her writing affected me, and still does. I know a lot of people don't 'get' why some of us revere her, but she packs so much humanity into her writing that she made me into a character writer - a poor echo of her triumphant, colossal talent - and a character READER. Write a great character and you will have me hooked on your book. So... thinking of Jane Austen today, in a world that sometimes feels like it has gone mad.
