My Dad's original 1972 pressing, and the new re-issue.

A little late for #JethroJuly - pardon my tardiness.

Typical that I've only just seen #JethroJuly on the 31st! I've been buying the remixed albums on LP since they first started reissuing them, but, as I've been on a Tull kick the last few months, I've started to get the book sets. They really are the gold standard for reissues.

Today’s listening, for the final day of #JethroJuly (with thanks to @mikestetter.bsky.social for organising!) is ‘Thick As A Brick’, the 1972 album by Jethro Tull. Pictured is my original copy of the album, which has the intact newspaper insert. A masterpiece, of course! This *may* have been written as a spoof of ‘concept albums’, but I refuse to believe this, as it’s just too good for that! DO NOT SEE ME RABBIT.

Life’s A Long Song: A Compendium of Jethro Tull in 33+1/3 songs by Richard Taylor (2024). The most recent edition to my library, this is a fun bathroom read where the author explores a random sampling of Tull songs across the years, adding personal reflection.

A series of books written by Laura Shelton (2021-2023) including the coffee-table Chronicles plus several handbooks for various albums within the bands canon. Ms Shelton is clearly passionate about her subject, but these books lean heavy on archival material.

A New Day Yesterday: UK Progressive Rock in the 1970s by Mike Barnes (2020). Not a Jethro Tull book per se but a monumental tomb to my favorite musical genre. Tull is surely in here, as are all the usual suspects (Floyd, Crimson, ELP, Genesis, Yes) and …

The Ballad of Jethro Tull - the official oral history (2019). This was crowdfunded in 2018, which was also the year in which my wife and I were expecting a son, thus it is he who gets name-checked in the back of the book. There’s a small nod to Ian in his given name.

A New Day Tapes volumes 1, 2, 3 by David Reed and Martin Webb (2013-2020). Culled from the pages of A New Day magazine, these feature all the interviews with various Tull alumni that were originally granted to the fan magazine. Is a 4th volume forthcoming?

Deluxe booksets (2012-2025). Tull have produced 18 of these (including the “Around The World Live” set) with more likely to come. Including music, video, photos, and story of the recording sessions and correpsonding tours. These are worth the cost for the print content alone.

Minstrel in the Gallery by David Rees (1998). The first biography about Jethro Tull! I truly savored this upon release, as this taught me so much about the band and satisfied my obsession.

Why did Ian Anderson play flute standing on one-leg ? #jethrojuly

1. Suffering from allergies /Hemorrhoids ?

2. He had the "flamingo" syndrome ?

3. It gave him more "wind" to play ?

“Thick As A Brick” fold-out newspaper from the 25th anniversary CD set that was released in 1997. Reading the entirety of this was a fun experience when I first got my hands on it back in ‘97. Lots of connective fibers between the various articles.
