Moth I catch him in hand, all powdery flutter, the deranged moth that for the last hour has been throwing himself recklessly, relentlessly, at my desk lamp, distracting me as I try to concentrate on truth and beauty till I'm crazier than a cracked-out wood rat. So now I carry the moth in the careful cradle of my fist, headed for the door to release it. I whisper into my hand, "Now I'm taking you to the back of the spaceship where you'll be examined-materials, metabolism, engineering, biodynamics— and then you'll be freed. You won't remember anything. Well, you might recall an ecstatic night with that gypsy moth you met around a motel porch light on the outskirts of Baton Rouge. And having lulled him with the promise of freedom swaddled in an erotic memory, I yank the door open and fling the moth into the night. I know. I know. I could have set him gently on the earth, let him get his breath and bearings before he took off. But I figure anything that has beat itself to tatters against the light needs to be hurled into darkness.
