When he got into his shop Sat morning, he found Nakai waiting for him in his usual seat, jacket off to reveal a chest holster with a very real Glock 19, & feet up on the counter, relaxed in a way that could honestly mean anything. “Mune,” he said in greeting.
“Masami,” Munehisa returned in kind, choosing to take it as a good sign that they were on given name terms. Too, he didn’t see anyone else in his shop, & Nakai wasn’t pointing any weapons at him, even if he was making it clear he was carrying.
“Can’t say you’re the last person I expected to hear from,” Nakai commented, “but you’re not far down the list.”
Straight to the point, then. “Heard you got yourself an apprentice.” Because that seemed a good place to start, especially given that Nakai had once sworn he wouldn’t be passing on his skills, that any replacements should have the balls to off him without trying any kissing up. Which, given he hadn’t had any sort of mentor, so far as Munehisa knew, and the rumours had painted him the murderer of the best Yakuza hitman in the special wards before him, tracked.
Nakai frowned. “No.” He dropped his feet to the floor & sat up. “Who told you that?”
Munehisa paused, realising that, no, the detective had never actually said he was Nakai’s apprentice. He’d just come to that conclusion, based on the bits he’d overheard out in the alley, & what the kid had implied in knowing Nakai. “Might’ve misunderstood,” he admitted. “That detective kid mentioned he knew you.”
“Detective kid?” Nakai murmured, before he went tense & shot Munehisa a sharp look. “Akechi?”
Was that that kid’s name? It was ringing a bell, certainly better than what must have been his given name, that Amamiya had kept using. “Yeah. Light hair, little messy?” He motioned with his hand to indicate the length of the kid’s hair.
Nakai didn’t lose any of his tenseness. “Mune, do yourself & your kid a favour, and stay away from Akechi.”
