I wouldn’t say it was as good as The Poppy War but it left me feeling happier. Not because it was better but because it was meant to because it was a fairy tale. And not a bad ending fairy tale but a nice ending fairy tale. Not Disney nice ending either. #juniperandthorn

Like it was SO Russian. Or Russian adjacent. The Ukrainian nurse I had after I delivered all of my kids narrated it in my head. It was so beautiful. And so Russian. There were curses and witches and cruelty and kindness and monsters and beauty. #juniperandthorn

But on the other hand was Juniper and Thorn, which was also dark but a different flavor of dark. The Poppy War was “this is fantasy but realistic” dark. Juniper and Thorn was “Northern/Russian fairy tale” dark, if that makes sense. #books #juniperandthorn
