Day 12 - Hydra
Hey I'm back to posting on social after a big rough hiatus; as I always do I'll finish this list late ๐. It was a mere coincidence this was once missing and to do a returnal. FYI I've loved @supergiantgames.bsky.social since Bastion โค๏ธ
#kaijune2024 #kaijune #hydra #monster #chibi
The idea for this technically started out the same as the coffee kaiju I drew previously. sentient food/drink. But when I realized how similar it was I tried to think about how to make it different. That's how I came up with the idea of it being a colony of living dough instead of a single being. on top of that instead of an accident causing them to take their form, they'd envelop bread into their structure and use the cooked bread for structure and some minor protection. basically humans improve the quality of life for this instead of make it worse, as was the case for the previous kaiju.
Starting this design I wanted a rainbow squid type feel, but apply it to a shellfish, in this case a nautilus for lack of a better term. This ended up becoming a technicolor shell that would flash colors in an attempt to disorient prey and distract predators.
My final kaiju I had known exactly what the plan was since going through the list. So I got a mascot character who's name is still in the works, currently I call it Boroku (at the time, didn't know if it was a real word). After a hundred or so years it grows into a larger creature I called a Boroku-Torga, that was much larger, had well defined spikes on it's tail that drag on the ground and turn up soil for plants to grow easier, along with growing massive engraved tusks. meanwhile the green spiky hair on it's back starts to fray as it no longer needs the spikes to hid from predators. This I would say is the concept of the adult at it's apex. towering over trees with tusks that promote healing to creatures in the area. the inspiration I had for this kaiju version was honestly the elephants from the jungle book and the Forest spirit from Princess Mononoke. Shaping the land as they walked, being a force of nature that promotes growth.
day 28-30. The final set. After everything's said and done, these drawing challenges are exhausting but rewarding. Absolutely love to do them when I can and I recommend them to anyone who's starting out or is in a drawing slump. help get the ideas going while having fun.
#kaijune #kaiju #kaijune2024
Before even starting this design I knew exactly what the design was going to be. A ceramic golem made of broken pots and energy that binds all the pieces together. Upon looking at this after updating a previous Kaijune design (Porcelain golem) I could see this as an ancient ancestor of that golem. Neat how designs work like that sometimes.
I believe at this point I was running behind on my kaijune drawings and decided to just take it easy on the concept. So we got Babe the blue ox with a boar snout and tusks, as well as utters, since it needed to be a cow.
As far as designs went, this one was fascinating. At first I was going to just make a kaiju that loved coffee, but that didn't feel like it met the prompt correctly. So I decided to just get really silly with it, make sentient coffee in a coffee maker suit with a coffee cup for a head. And as goofy as this one came out, this one's honestly one of my favorites.
Days 25-27. Only adding 3 here so I have 3 for the last group. sort of spread them out evenly as much as I can. At this point I think I steered away from references aside from one specifically in this set, one guess on which one that is ๐ค
#kaijune #kaiju #kaijune2024
Interestingly enough, I believe I drew this concept when I was a child. I wanted to make the scariest looking thing I possibly could lurking under the water. a t-rex like face with very long spindly teeth, luring people in with a fake lighthouse like an angler fish.
I really enjoyed the concept for this one above anything else for this design. A robot fueled by a coffin on it's back that holds the remains of dead kaiju felt like a great design to start with, but after that I thought "great, but what would it need this power source for". This lead to me coming up with the concept of this red alloy that can be programmed to stretch and change shape. the mech would need a very strong fuel source to make that work, so the coffin serves it's purpose.
If I'm correct, this was the design I just could not think of anything for other then a second set of ears. But in realizing I couldn't think of anything, it lead me to the Rhino design I made, which then reminded me of the color scheme I had used for the space turtle, which lead to the color scheme of this kaiju. to me personally, this is how the design went from boring to a fun simple design.
This is certainly another design I made when I was a kid. I had always liked giant robots but the ones I liked the most were the heavy duty multi-propose bots since I feel if we were ever to get giant mechs, this would be the only way for them to see real use, is if they served multiple purposes.
days 21-24. Something I feel worth talking about is the use of references. There's nothing wrong basing a design around an existing concept (that's how ideation works), so long as the end result is distinct. sadly time was a factor for these, so couldn't do much ideation
#kaijune #kaiju #kaijune2024
Didn't get too crazy with the design for this one aside from a few additions to a normal rhino. I had not realized at the time but the color scheme is almost the same as the space turtle drawing, except trading the blueish black for a greyish black.
For this design I was basically trying to make a personification of a virus with an RGB version of godzillas spikes. basically used Gigan as the base concept (hence the name) then expanded from there with details I wanted for this design. added shoulder crystals similar to space godzilla, eyes similar to venom, claws instead of a single blade for hands.
Circus made for a bit of a difficult theme to work with. Started with a strong man concept, but then I started to remember the big guy and little guy trope. Ferra and Torr from mortal kombat, Nunu and Willump in league of legends. That lead to the smaller kaiju I eventually named Solomon. the name I used just cause I liked Solomon Grundy from Justice League Unlimited and splitting up the name made for a fun duo name scheme.
Out the gate, the concept for this one was basically just Silver Chariot from Jojo with the blades from AoT's Omni-directional mobility gear. The blade tip was an idea that generously could be said was derived from the wyrm stake from Monster Hunter's Gunlance, but the idea of an explosive that stabs into a giant enemy monster is not uncommon in media, likely was just the first version of it that popped into my head. fencing isn't really an effective style for fighting a giant monster on the surface, but if the tip could explode on the other hand, it makes for a VERY effective tool. so the idea flowed from there. Of course it would need replacement tips in case one didn't do the job, so it'd need multiple replacements, hence the ODM gear parallel.
days 17-20. not much to say other then I think I basically hit how I wanted to handle backgrounds for this. very simple background with maybe some more detailed items up front.
#kaijune #kaiju #kaijune2024
Here I tried really hard to avoid anything monkey king related. Also ended up using this one to practice more dynamic posing since design wise there wasn't going to be many small details to worry about.
I like to imagine all the small details that the previous kaiju lacked, this one took. I was inspired by the idea of a being made of book pages and harlequins. What I really enjoyed from this one was drawing the writing on the pages it's made from. drawing symbols is a bit of a specialty of mine so this really let me flex that muscle.
the initial concept for day 15 came very quick. giant marionette from space, controlled by strings coming out of a wormhole. near the end I thought it'd be funny to make the wormhole shaped like a control bar. I don't recall at what point I decided to make it move on a wheel instead of having legs, but I think that influence came from the boss from Legend of Zelda: the Wind Waker, that was a giant stone head with hands. Not so much the design but more so the idea of it not being the full body was what I wanted to stick to, which lead to it basically being a wooden skeleton torso on a ball wheel.
The name pangolin was picked due to the segmented tail on the back being sort of in a similar look to the scales on a pangolin. didn't think it was that close, but then Halo named their vehicles after animals that really didn't look anywhere close to said animals so I figured it wouldn't be that big of a stretch. The overall design is basically much closer to what I'd like from my own personal mech design, aside from the gun that is just straight up a tank gun with a 4 prong bayonet. The design was slightly inspired by Custom Robo designs if I were to name any kind of reference outside of gundam which I feel is basically the blueprint for giant mechs.
days 13-16. really happy with the 3 later designs specifically. while the ideas draw from other stuff, they were much more loosely based on things then in earlier kaiju I had drawn.
#kaijune #kaiju #kaijune2024
For the mule theme, I went with a bunch of different references. Sleipnir, Odin's 8 legged horse, behemoth, Babe the blue ox and the Oliphaunts from Lord of the Rings to name a few.
At this point I had realized I had done a ton of naturally occurring kaiju, robot kaiju and space kaiju, but I had not touched the concept of a lab experiment gone wrong. That's where this kaiju came in. While I did sort of stretch the definition of pipe by saying the tubes in the design are "flexible tubes", I'm pretty happy with how unnatural the end result looks with exposed innards filled with piping and batteries attached to it from the outside, complete with a massive tank strapped to it's back.
This one I didn't have a strong concept in mind other then a beetle that could cause earthquakes and a sort of wood like pattern on it's shell. then as I started planning out the design, I tried to think about creatures from games that were earthquake related and remembered Shara Ishvalda from Monster Hunter World Iceborne. While the aspects I used from Shara are similar, I feel the way I used them makes it distinct.
This concept I had been sitting on for a while and was happy to really get to explore fully for kaijune. taking the concept of the world turtle and applying in a way similar to the star whale from Doctor Who. A world that's build on the shell of the turtle rather than held up by it. The color scheme of gold and almost black blue also became a favorite color combination for me after this.
For presentation I was trying to go with a sort of 70's CRT monitor presenting classified information feel that half way through Kaijune I was kind of wishing I hadn't done just cause it added extra work, just to force me to add a green tint to all my drawings.
#kaijune #kaiju #kaijune2024
This one was a bit of an odd design for me. I absolutely loved it but every part of it's design didn't quite feel like it matched up. In the end I basically got a Frieza like alien with armor that's questionably part of it's body weird tiger colors that I liked too much to change up and an ability to grow red diamonds from it's body. I don't dislike it and remembering how silly some 70's monster movie designs were helped me feel better about it's design, but I certainly would try to make things mesh together better if I were to redesign it.
With how random this prompt was, I decided I wanted to get fun and light hearted with the design. Was looking at puppy pictures while trying to come up with a concept and the word "puptato" popped into my head. It was from that moment that I made the firm decision that was now what the kaiju would be.
Very early on with this kaiju's design, I wanted to make it the rival of my day 2 Kaiju which used a hurricane theme. With a windmill theme I felt it would make more sense to make it a robot, but what made the design interesting was coming up with the lore that it is a very old mech that used to be an old brick and wood windmill converted to fight Kaiju, then slightly modified over the years to make it able to handle threats better. And yes, Nether Gundam was a reference. I grew up with G Gundam and I loved that goofy windmill mech.
For this Kaiju, I took a few different references to get the basic them I was going for, which was a giant space justiciar that brings cold, unfeeling justice to any who breaks it's laws, weather it be a single major threat or an entire planet. Drawing again from Yugioh, I used Elemental Hero Neos, Diablo's Archangel of Justice and the head of the drone from Alien Planet.
Before June I had no plans on doing Kaijune, but then I was curious if I could handle drawing a kaiju once a day for a month which got me to take up the challenge. The prompts I got from a generator since I couldn't find prompts I liked much (most being Godzilla themed).
#kaijune #kaiju #kaijune2024
The design of my first Kaiju was heavily influenced on Ultraman, Ultimate Muscle and sort of power rangers, with an extra bit with the arms being... more just an idea of mine as far as I know? basically he charges energy into his forearms like a mix of Godzilla and Popeye then uses it to power up anything from punches, throws or anything similar. He was made to not exactly be good or evil, but just all about fighting strong opponents and prove his worth.
For this Kaiju I ended up focusing on the idea a hurricane as the base concept, using wind and water to devastate areas. the red glowing weak points are sort of a reference to the eye of a storm. The design was made from elements of Gators, two headed hydra, coral, sharks catfish with the whiskers and the Yugioh card Suijin to a small extent.
One of my favorite Kaiju as someone who enjoys earth/plant/rock elemental stuff. the design of this is very close to these giant creatures I saw from a special called Alien Planet when I was a kid, with some more personal touches. I wanted it's design to be intimidating but peaceful. first time I really started trying to blend colors, something I really should get back to doing.
This one I had two very boring ideas to start with. a wicker basket kaiju or a spider kaiju. wasn't a huge fan of either, but as I thought about the design. I realized that most giant spiders in media tend to be female, rarely being the male due to them being less intimidating, which got me thinking "what if it was a male spider and the really concerning part was the threat of a much larger female hiding somewhere?". Even better was after some research realizing a lot of male spiders are more colorful in order to attract mates, leading to a more colorful design, partly taking inspiration from the peacock spider.
Back to reposting from the other site and the group of art I was least looking forward to reposting due to how many of these I got to get through. Kaijune is fun but almost every prompt list was godzilla this year, so I made my own.
