Image titled “Throwback Thursday – ‘Luggable’ computers.” The background shows a soft desert sand landscape with a magnifying glass icon near the title. In the center, a Kaypro 10 computer is shown — a large gray portable computer with a built-in green monochrome CRT display, dual floppy drives, and a detachable keyboard resting flat in front. The display shows green text in a command-line interface. Text at the bottom reads: “The ‘luggable’ computer was the first portable computer. Resembling a large tool box (and just as heavy) these early machines were technically portable but they definitely didn’t fit on your lap (or even have a battery).” At the bottom right corner, the text vintage.computer appears in brown.
Before laptops, there were “luggables.” Early portables like the Kaypro could technically travel, if you didn’t mind carrying 25 pounds of metal, CRT, and floppy drives. Not exactly a “lap-top". #VintageComputing #Kaypro #RetroTech #PortableComputers #VintageComputer
My first computer (1983/4). It was “portable” (keyboard locked into the unit, shielding green CRT and disk drives). Metal chassis. #Kaypro

Cleaned and re-assembled this Kaypro II is working perfectly. The screen burn in and the keyboard shows signs that this machine was once well used. A perfect example of simple design in and out. Will be a nice addition next to the Osborne 1.

IT’S ALIVE! This Kaypro II is back. It boots and it appears the repaired A drive works. Time to tackle the grubby keyboard.

One bad voltage regulator replaced and the dead drive is fixed. Back to re-assembling the Kaypro II.

Two Tandon TM100-1A drives from the Kaypro II. One checks tests good the other doesn’t spin. Time to do some debugging and fixing.

A little bubbling in some rust remover and I the original screws on the Kaypro can be re-used.

First time I use steel wool to clean a computer case. Rub off the oxidation on the aluminum case of the Kaypro.

Oh that Rifa cap looks ready to give the next guy to power on this Kaypro II a bad day. EW! A gooey anode cap. But so far nothing really bad.

So that’s a Kaypro II. Pretty simple and industrial construction. No old crumbling plastic or delicate little snaps or clips to break. No “unoptanium” chips. Just a metal box, screw in and wire up what you need. Cleaning time and reassembly.

Latest pick up a Kaypro II. Been looking for one for a while. This one was in a basement for the past 40 years. Pretty dirty and all the screws are rusty. But all (except the keyboard wire) looks intact. Time to bust it open and see how it looks inside.

Vintage 80s(?) Kaypro computer, pre Windows, pre Apple.
What if I have one of these and I write exclusively on it? What if the plot is every scanner call I hear in 24 hours? #kaypro #amwriting #writersky #writingcommunity #shutupandwrite
This glorious #Kaypro, now living a second life as a portal to Amis XE BBS running on retro soul. Want to relive the golden age of phosphor glow, Atascii/Ascii, Telnet into Amis86.ddns.net port 9000 and join the Atari BBS revolution. #BBSing #southernamis #RetroComputing #atari
An illustration from the Kaypro II manual shows the computer displaying a grinning man’s face and extending a human arm with a rolled up shirtsleeve to shake hands with a businesswoman holding a copy of the manual. The page’s title reads “Meet The Kaypro!”
Reminded today of this amazingly weird art in the Kaypro II owner’s manual.
