We see multiple shots of the corpse's wounds being closed up by stretching out what remaining flesh there is over them, via Devere's green necromantic magic. The wounds being closed are gaping bite wounds on his side and arm, and one of his legs, which is missing the entire lower half starting above the knee, is closed into a simple stump. The end result would be presumably be imperfect. Gates answers Devere's concerns as he works. Gates: We just gotta clean 'im up as best we can. Then I'll use some powder and sprays before we cover 'im back up. Devere stares at the corpse with glowing eyes and continues to gesture with his hands to finish up his magical work. Gates simply observes. Gates: At least his head ain't too bad. Besides the rot, I mean. You can close them scratches on his face easily, right? Devere: He'll still look scarred. A closeup of the withered corpse's face, which appears to be a young man with longer brown hair. His eyes are closed but his mouth hangs open a little. There are very large cuts all the way down his face from knucker claws. Gates comments off screen. Gates: Just do what ya can. The shot of the man blurs and we fade out to the next scene.

Gates walks off to the side. Gates: Anyway, go ahead and get rid of what maggots ya can. Devere pulls off the sheet that was covering the corpse, and a few maggots come off with it. Devere: Mm. Devere raises his hands above the body and his eyes start glowing bright green. We see some maggots wriggling a bit on the slab... Only for them to shrivel up like dried grapes in the next shot, Devere having apparently killed them all at once. Devere now has control over the maggots and pulls them out of the body and off the table. We see this in the form of him gesturing upwards with his hands and a mass of floating maggots following his movements. Devere: His widow won't even wait for us to embalm him? Next to Devere, Gates has brought over a barrel and removed the lid. Devere directs the mass of floating maggots into it with some arm more gestures. Gates: Nope. Cleary barely got 'er to wait as it is. Devere: But the decay... the smell.

Gates, who's pulling up his hood, and Devere, who's starting to put on his gloves, walk into an embalming area within the mortuary. Within is stone slabs for bodies, shelves stocked with various embalming and cleaning items, boxes no doubt filled with similar items, and a few guide books on the task. There are also buckets, barrels, and a large pan of water nearby. On one of the slabs is a body covered in a white, stained sheet. A bare leg, that has deep cuts, is sticking out, and it appears that's the only leg it has. The other one appears to be missing entirely. There are flies buzzing all around the body. Devere and Gates stand over the man's body, looking at it. While mostly covered by the sheet, we see it's bare upper half that has big, gaping wounds full of maggots, and of course the buzzing flies around it. The way the cloth lays over it suggests that it's missing half of an arm as well as the leg. The knucker absolutely tore this man asunder, and it's clear the body's been decomposing for a day or two at the very least. Near the slab is a portable table with various tools of embalming on it. Devere: What a mess. Devere looks a bit angry looking at the body as he tugs on his other glove. Devere: This is the third death in four months. The knucker hunters need to get on this already. Gates eyes Devere with a knowing look. Gates: This IS a knucker hunter. Devere turns his head to look at Gates. Though his mouth is covered with the mask, his wide eyes spell out his shock. Gates: Heh, guess you didn't notice his gear sittin' in there. He was new to the job and... obviously wasn't ready.

Knell holds the doll against herself. Knell: Daddy was so mad last night... I was hurtin' a lot, and he kept hittin' me... ...so I just... ran. Knell sits cross-legged with her doll, looking around at her toys and knick-knacks in her little tree haven. Knell: Then I remembered where the necromancer's house was. Daddy's scared of his magic, so I hoped he wouldn't follow me there. Knell lifts her doll in front of her and looks at it sadly. Knell: I didn't think the necromancer would be out in the rain, but he was, an' he caught me. H-He's big and weird lookin' and his glowy eyes are creepy. Knell's voice breaks a little as she holds back tears. Knell: I fell in the river, but he got me out. I thought he wanted me dead an' w-was gonna finish me off. I was real scared, Dragomira. Knell recalls her time with Devere, and how he treated her with kindness. Knell: But.... The final panel is completely black and we only get Knell's words. Knell: I think maybe... he's not so bad.

Knell crawls into the hollowed out tree. Inside are various toys and trinkets that Knell has collected over time, including a tattered, filthy doll with red hair, a dress, a drawn-on angry face, and a stick "sword" tied to it's hand. There's also a bell, a "dragon" that's just a conveniently shaped, thick branch with a face drawn on and paper wings stuck into it, a jump rope, two wooden spoons with faces drawn on, a small collection of rocks, a large stick turned into a makeshift "sword" for Knell herself, blocks, kids books, and some orange flowers stuck into a crevice in the tree. Knell: I'm back, Dragomira! Knell is referring to her doll. Knell picks up the doll. Knell: Did ya protect the fort? For a couple of panels, Knell silently fiddles with her doll. She has a small smile but is looking very tired and dejected. With the third panel she finally speaks to Dragomira again. Knell: I almost died.

Knell walks away from the cabin while rubbing away liquid from under her nose. She has tears in her eyes but looks angry. Knell: ...Like you'd give me much anyway. *sniff* Knell walks towards a nearby wooded area. We see the axe that Tyrus stuck into the tree stump behind her. Knell has walked into a lovely little area with a large, but hollow tree that she's apparently turned into a little fort as there's makeshift curtains covering the hole. There's mushrooms on the side of the tree. Nearby is a couple of very large rocks covered in melted candles and surrounded by blue mushrooms. There's also a circle of rocks with an area for lighting a fire, and a fabric-covered log for sitting near it. Light is shining through the leaves, leaving a lovely sunlight pattern all over everything. This is clearly Knell's secret refuge. Knell pushes aside the curtains to the tree opening, smiling as she looks inside.

Tyrus suddenly raises his axe. Tyrus: In that case, seein' as he already-- Knell goes white as a sheet at the sight. Tyrus slams the axe down into the tree stump where he was chopping wood with a loud CHOK. Tyrus: --FED you... Knell pants, both relieved and still processing the threat with the axe. Tyrus (off screen): ...then you don't need any breakfast, do ya? Tyrus has picked up the carrier full of chopped wood and is now heading towards the cabin. Knell stands still, watching him go. Tyrus: And since you're so keen on runnin' around outside... you can stay out here 'til I'm finished eatin'. Tyrus, having opened the door, is now entering the cabin. Knell runs up behind him. Knell: D-Daddy, at least lemme get my-- Tyrus slams the door in her face. Knell stares defeated at the door. There's a clicking noise, hinting that Tyrus has locked it. Knell: ...shoes.

Knell walks towards the cabin door cautiously. Knell: D... Daddy? Nearby, an axe comes down into a tree stump, cutting a piece of wood that was on it clean in two. The noise startles Knell and she jumps back. After completing the chop, Knell's father, Tyrus, yanks the axe's blade out of the stump. He looks like he's been chopping for a while since he has a mostly full firewood carrier sitting nearby, and his light beige shirt has soaked armpits. Tyrus: So the necromancer got you out of the water after all. Tyrus turns his head to look at Knell, glaring at her. He has the same blue-black hair (though cut short, with sideburns and a moustacheless goatee) and stormy blue eyes as his daughter, but his skin is not as pale as hers. Tyrus: It just confirms what I've always known... you're tainted with death. He must've smelled it.

Knell continues to tremble, sweat, and nibble at her nails nervously as she stares in dread at it, still holding her bag of clothes. Devere is watching Knell leave (but we only see him from the back). She has run past the open cemetery gate and is now on a dirt road that splits into three different paths. She seems to be heading down the path on the right. A village full of wooden cabins, some with smoke coming out of their chimneys, lies further beyond. You can also see someone has hung out their laundry to dry on a line. Devere continues to observe Knell's departure with uncertainty. When she is out of sight, he turns around... ...and leads his unicorn, Bill, back into the cemetery. Devere: Weird kid. In a series of small panels, the scene fades out in a hazy blur.
