She was born in a noble Nahua family on the gulf coast, sold by her brother to a Maya cacique who gave her to the conquistador Hernán Cortés who shared the same enemy, the Aztec Empire. As his interpreter and adviser, she helped him vanquish the 7 lords of the Tenochtitlan region. He was so proud of this accomplishment that he had his coat of arms encircled by a chain bounding the 7 lords’ heads. I imagine he could have made a necklace with that chain and offered it to La Malinche.
