A dark gray ellipsoid bird with some slight color in the feathers resting on some large rocks. My first ever bird seen in Galápagos in the riprap protecting the dock where we got onto the zodiacs. I did not want to be left behind. My 70-300 lens hood went flying into this riprap because I was so excited. It stayed there. If you look up this bird in the wiki you will note the controversy surrounding its taxonomic placement. Birds of the World (Cornell) lists no lava heron just a Galápagos subspecies of the striated heron. It is closely related to the Green Heron we see in N America.

Although this looks quite a bit different than the birds in the other 2 images it is the same bird, a juvenile. It fits the Lava heron much better into what is felt to be the current taxonomy. See a brief referral in the first Alt

For EveryHeron I am adding a Lava Heron which is the first bird I saw on hitting Galápagos. I lost my lens hood ($60)in the rocks.😢 see alt for referral on its taxonomy. Love bird action.
