#Malthouse Black Light. Gorgeous set and lighting and a pretty interesting play, with good performances. Sadly the actor playing the grandmother had to pull out so we had a substitute reading from the script, which diluted the power - but at least we got to see it!

Finding out what the Saxons ate - Worcestershire Archive & Archaeology Service Feeding Anglo-Saxon England (‘FeedSax’) is a highly important project looking at food in the Anglo-Saxon period, and one of our excavations has helped them with their project. FeedSax is an ERC-funded...

Because of the intriguing #malthouse and fierce hearth at Skipsea, I've been looking for other finds of Anglo Saxon grain dryers. Both harvested grain and malt need to be dries slowly and carefully, using warm/hot air rather that heat and flames. See here:

I've finished my popcorn. I like to ponder upon a possible #malthouse whatever the archaeological era. We've watched this twice. It's available for a few more days online. I'm curious about that "great heat" of the fire. This would kill malt, make it useless for brewing. Grain dryers need a flue. 🤔

#Malthouse The Red Shoes. Meow Meow’s showgirl diva is depleted, exhausted by capitalism (CD to purchase after!), but revived by fellow performers including Kanen Breen as an unformed idea, then bacchanalic faun, then Andersen himself to be asked: why so misogynist, Hans? A joyous, meandering romp.

#Malthouse #Collarts Peer Gynt, Part 1. Ibsen’s surreal verse drama is anti-realist and this non-traditional production was appropriate, but I never tuned into the symbolic & unlikeable characters, random plot and shouty delivery. Despite clever touches in the direction, I didn’t stay for Part 2.

#Malthouse Troy. An epic yet intimate work that, through Tom Wright’s poetic/brutal writing, makes every painful move relevant to today’s painful news, enhanced by Ian Michael’s sure direction and the fantastic cast & crew. Overwhelming; I came back the following week bringing friends.

#Malthouse The Orchard. #PonyCam’s “classics adaptation” main stage premiere, riffing off Chekhov’s Cherry Orchard themes & characters while revealing the economic impossibility of keeping open spaces for artistic exploration. It’s also silly, amusing, wild, and constantly surprising. Fantastic!

#Malthouse #MerlynTheatre ECHO: Every Cold-Hearted Oxygen. Another Nassim Soleimanpour ‘cold read’ play, with added AV trickery including himself from Berlin, exploring his traumatic relationship with Iran. But potent messages are watered down & Pia Miranda’s role is sidelined rather than a conduit.

#Malthouse Truth. Patricia Cornelius tackles a public figure rather than her usual marginalised voiceless subjects. While her take on Julian Assange is fascinating, voiced by 5 actors, the play only takes flight in the interstitial scenes of everybodies/nobodies actually living with oppression.

#Malthouse A Nightime Travesty by A Daylight Connection, directed by Stephen Nicolazzo. Opening night. Dreadfully tedious. The excellent final 90 seconds did not justify the preceding 90 minutes.

While lying on the floor procrastinating (supposedly stretching my lower back) I pulled out & reread this script: White Rabbit Red Rabbit by Nassim Soleimanpour, 2010, from the 2013 #Malthouse production where I had the privilege of stepping onto the stage & ‘killing’ my theatre crush Alison Bell 🫗🤗

#Malthouse Homo Pentecostus. Joel Bray draws in Peter Paltos and, with Emma Valente, they create an old-school happy-clappy church hall - then, through chat and dance and reflection, tear it down and build something new on its ruins. Lovely and, at the end, poetically transformational.

#Malthouse Yentl. An astonishing show, surging forward with confidence and inclusiveness via sprightly impishness and determination: how to cut a swathe across conventionally narrow mindsets? And it does it triumphantly. Loved, loved it.

#Malthouse The Hate Race. From her memoir, Maxine Beneba Clarke‘s show’s a short & urgent jolt to the system; Zahra Newman is utterly compelling as Maxine growing in a patchwork of racism & microaggressions. Kuda Mapeza‘s live music transforms into theatrical support & sisterhood. Wonderful.

#Malthouse Chase (A Daylight Connection). Carly Sheppard’s Chase is a girl trapped by circumstance, trying to get by, though it happens to be the end of the world - intergenerational trauma indeed. Highly effective, greatly moving, and an amazing use of projection. Recommended.

#Malthouse Whose Gonna Love ‘Em? I am that I AM (A Daylight Connection). Heightened language & choreographed choral delivery creates a portrait of trauma. Kamarra Bell-Wykes’ text poetically repeats, trapping the committed performers in loops of self-harm, though I wasn’t moved.

#Malthouse Hour of the Wolf. I really enjoyed my 2nd visit, perhaps because I could better curate it, rewatch what I wanted, fill in where I could, glimpse the wolf stealing bread, and solve a few mysteries. Completely lost the pottery studio towards the end, was it closed off?… #TwinPeaks vibe sign

#Malthouse Hour of the Wolf. Immersive theatre: we wander in a labyrinth while a multi-part play repeats 3 times around us, Ingmar Bergman’s nocturnal time of reckoning transposed to Aussie anywheretown. I wasn’t particularly interested or impressed… Amazing sets. Visit 2 soon.
