Great Western Malting In 1935 the Blitz-Weinhard beer brewers picked Vancouver as the site of their new malting facility. The site was strategically located on the shore of the mighty Columbia River, a few hundred miles downstream from acres and acres of barley fields in eastern Washington, Oregon, and the Willamette Valley, and the site was next to the main Burlington Northern rail line. Should I clarify something about floor malting? I will. Victorian floor maltings dealt with huge amounts of grain, covering a large floor area. In earlier historic and prehistoric times it was batch malting: small amounts of grain germinated on part of the floor, not the whole floor. #malting #malt
Article on traditional farmhouse #malting & #brewing traditions in Germany: The farmers brewed from their own grain, so the farmers made the malts themselves from barley. They dried the malt on a kiln called an est, which was a stone shelf on top of a brick firebox, with a fireplace on the floor.🏺🍺
