We're back! The #LaMontagneLab is in the Huron Mountains for year 14 of our long-term study on trees! 🌲 #MastSeeding #HMWF #IvesLakeFieldStation @chernickykiley.bsky.social @riley-adams.bsky.social
Two graphs, top one shows variation in reproduction across years for species. The bottom shows high synchrony in reproduction across species.
#MastSeeding is a pattern of synchronous & highly variable reproduction over time in perennial plants - at a population level. A dominant hypothesis for it is seed-predator satiation. Lots of woody plants have similar environmental cues. There could be benefits & costs to community-level synchrony.
5 people at a table, smiling at the camera.
Let the informal #BES2024 meet-ups begin! Here with some #MastSeeding folks, @andrewhacket-pain.bsky.social @micbog.bsky.social, also Jakub Szymkowiak & Eléonore Perret. 🌲 🌳
Masting, or mast seeding, is a strategy where oak trees (and other types of trees that produce nuts or seeds) produce a large number of acorns in some years and very few in others. #science #sciencefacts #acorns #masting #mastseeding
