How beautiful is this ‘henge’ - #MaumburyRings in Dorchester - built 4500 years ago. There was once a large #standingstone at the north entrance (pov). The circle was used as a Roman amphitheatre but I can imagine it as a venue for local gatherings across the centuries. 12/04/24

During the summer of 1723, William Stukeley began a series of excursions in horseback from Wilton into Dorst to explore its antiquites.
He visitied #Dorchester, #Dorset a few days before Aug.22 and made notes for his "Itenerarium", particularly interested in #MaumburyRings.

At that time #MaumburyRings was the subject of fierce debate on whether it was a Roman or an older site (both turned out to be true) and a minority of the latter of those believed it was a 'Sun Temple'.
