Meet K In this episode of The Plain People’s Podcast, we continue our look into Amish and Mennonite mental health systems—specifically, what are known as “the facilities,” or residential treatment centers for those struggling within plain communities. This episode focuses on Hoffnung Heim, a facility widely known among the Amish as a trusted place for women to receive help. But what is the reality inside these treatment centers? Our guest shares her firsthand experience at Hoffnung Heim after growing up in a violent and abusive Amish home. Through her story, we explore the structure of Amish support systems, including church-appointed support groups—a system designed to guide individuals in crisis, but one that often requires full transparency, compliance, and submission to authority. Many survivors are now asking:Are these systems truly helping—or are they protecting the church? This episode also introduces a unique recording approach. A portable recording device was left in Ohio, allowing Amish women to share their stories privately, in their own homes. While the audio quality may vary, the goal remains the same: to document real experiences directly from Amish women. These are Amish voices, speaking about abuse, mental health, religious control, and the barriers to seeking help. This is part of an ongoing series uncovering:Amish mental health treatment centersReligious trauma in Amish and Mennonite communitiesAbuse and systemic barriers within plain communitiesSurvivor stories and lived experiences—These are Amish women speaking.—For more research, resources, and ongoing work:Substack: The Plain People’s ProjectWebsite: www.theplainpeoplespodcast.comInstagram: The Plain People’s Podcast

Post Trauma Recovery | Embracing Positivity, Hope, And Vitality Send us Fan MailOne Year of The Angela Rose Show: Angela Answers Questions on Healing, Growth & Reclaiming Herself“I like to think that my younger self is grinning because she feels seen.”In this heartfelt one-year anniversary episode of The Angela Rose Show, Angela turns the microphone toward herself for a deeply personal conversation about growth, healing, creativity, and what this past year of podcasting has meant to her.Instead of interviewing a guest, Angela answers thoughtful questions submitted by some of her closest friends, supporters, and therapist—people who have walked beside her behind the scenes and helped cheer her on through this journey. The result is an honest, reflective episode that celebrates not just a milestone, but the courage it takes to keep showing up.Angela opens up about what she would say to the version of herself who started this podcast a year ago, the unexpected ways this work has grown her, and what it has meant to move from writing privately into the deeper vulnerability of being seen and heard on camera. She also shares powerful insight into trauma recovery, boundaries, inner child healing, spirituality after leaving rigid religion, somatic healing, self-defense, safety, and the quiet but life-changing shift of learning that she deserves good things. With honesty and reflection, we explore:• What Angela would say to herself at the very beginning of this podcast journey• How creating the show has deepened her confidence, voice, and sense of self• The strength of emotional attunement, presence, and making others feel safe• Why boundaries became essential as the platform and community grew• How she holds both her own story and others’ stories without losing individuality• What it was like growing up in a family that never fully fit the Mennonite mold• How her understanding of faith, spirituality, and God has changed since leaving rigid religion• The role of safety, therapy, friendships, and survivor community in post-trauma recovery• Why nature, movement, massage, laughter, and self-defense have become vital parts of healing• How hope, creativity, play, and honoring her younger self continue to shape who she is becomingThis is not just an anniversary episode. It is a story of reflection, reclamation, and becoming more fully yourself.Trigger Warning: Discussion of trauma, religious abuse, complex trauma, emotional pain, retraumatization, and recovery themes. If Angela’s story or this podcast has meant something to you over the past year, thank you for being here. People Helpers and Plain Run Facilities For years, Mennonite and Amish women have quietly spoken about “the facilities” — residential programs where church members are sent for restoration, discipline, or mental health support. But what exactly are these places? In this episode of The Plain People's Podcast, Jasper Hoffman begins unpacking one of the most complex and hidden barriers facing Amish and Anabaptist survivors: a network of unlicensed and unregistered residential treatment facilities operating across multiple states. This series features Amish women speaking in their own words about their experiences inside these programs and the pressure they faced when being sent away.Drawing on years of investigation, survivor interviews, and newly obtained documents — including an updated Mental Health Facility Research Guide issued by the Amish Steering Committee — Jasper explores how these facilities are organized, how they avoid oversight, and how families are guided to select programs based on theology, obedience to ministry leadership, and views on reporting abuse. Many women who enter these facilities are described as “choosing” to go.But as one Amish woman told Jasper:“If no is not an option, then yes is not a choice.”Over the next several weeks, we will examine the role these facilities play within a larger system involving ministry leadership, restoration teams, tourism economies, and community power structures. Before crimes can be solved, they first have to be seen.Topics discussed in this episode: Amish communities, Amish women, Amish abuse, Amish mental health, residential treatment facilities, unlicensed treatment centers, religious trauma, Anabaptist communities, cult recovery, investigative journalism, and survivor advocacy.Support & ResourcesThis investigation is made possible by listeners and supporters who help fund continued research and reporting. To learn more, read additional research, and support this work:Website:www.plainpeoplespodcast.comSubstack:The Plain People’s Projecthttps://plainpeoplesproject.substack.com

WE ARE SO BACK The Ruth Miller trial begins in Ohio this week, and I'm heading there for full bench trial coverage. Before we get into courtroom testimony, this episode lays some groundwork — the work happening quietly inside Amish and Mennonite (Plain) communities, the barriers women face when trying to seek help, and the ongoing conversations with local and federal agencies who are often navigating cultural nuances from the outside. I also read a letter sent to the Ohio Attorney General's Office by women from the community where Ruth was living. And while Ruth was not involved in writing the letter, nor does it tie into her trial in any way, it reflects broader concerns from women in the community as a whole — many describing feeling unseen and unheard. While Ruth's case is the current focus, there are many voices and lived experiences that give context to what's unfolding in the communities around. Much of that context hasn't been publicly heard until now. Raised to Fear Our Own Bodies | Purity Culture Exposed
Raised to Fear Our Own Bodies | Purity Culture Exposed Purity Culture, Toxic Sexuality Teachings & Shame Recovery “Shame doesn’t produce integrity, it produces secrecy. Healing begins when curiosity replaces fear.” In this raw, deeply validating episode of The Angela Rose Show, Angela is joined by Ann for a mutual conversation about the lasting impact of purity culture and toxic sexuality teachings inside Mennonite/plain communities. Together, they unpack the covert messaging so many of us absorbed growing up: that bodies are “dangerous,” that normal attraction equals lust, that women carry responsibility for men’s behavior, and that boys are automatically framed as predators. They also name how silence around sex doesn’t protect children... it isolates them, removes language, and increases shame. This episode is meant to be shame-reducing, clarifying, and empowering for anyone who grew up in high-control religious spaces, and for survivors trying to untangle fear-based beliefs from their natural humanity. With honesty and compassion, we explore: • The difference between attraction vs. lust (and why noticing beauty isn’t “sin”) • How “modesty” messaging trained girls to feel responsible for men’s purity • How boys were conditioned to expect lust—and punished for normal body development • The harm of “shame-faced” obedience, eye-averting, and dehumanizing gender roles • How purity culture creates fear, secrecy, and disconnection instead of integrity • Why arousal does not equal consent (and why that matters for survivors) • The impact of silence: lacking language for anatomy, consent, abuse, and boundaries • Why education isn’t corruption; it’s safety • How reclaiming agency begins when curiosity replaces fear This is not just a conversation about purity culture. It’s a conversation about agency, wholeness, and learning to trust your body again. Trigger Warning: Discussion of trauma, child sexual abuse, sexual coercion, purity culture, religious punishment, shame, modesty control, dissociation/freeze responses, and other sensitive topics. This content is for educational purposes. Please take care of yourself while listening. If this episode resonated with you, share it with someone who needs language for what they lived through. My Parents Gave Me to a Cult Leader at 15 (Hidden in the Woods with Newborn)
My Parents Gave Me to a Cult Leader at 15 (Hidden in the Woods with Newborn) It started when Maria Vogel’s mother was k*dnapped and taken to Canada before somehow convincing her parents to give marital consent. Maria would end up being one of 11 children who were moved over and over from different Amish and Mennonite settlements. Maria’s father was a wannabe cult leader and stirred up trouble wherever he went. Homemade preaching tapes sent out to the world would attract predat*rs into Maria’s home. One of them being a Russian man named Sergey, a cult leader himself. At 15, Maria’s parents willingly gave her to Sergey to marry off to another Russian man. At 16 she was alone, hidden in a swampy woodland without electricity or running water, struggling to survive with a newborn. Find Maria on Social Media! When Religion Conceals Abuse: Jasiel's Rescue From an Amish Mennonite Cult
When Religion Conceals Abuse: Jasiel's Rescue From an Amish Mennonite Cult Jasiel’s Escape from an Amish Mennonite Cult, Childhood Abuse & Rape, and the Long Road to Safety “I believe you—and I want you to trust yourself enough to believe yourself.” In this deeply sobering episode of The Angela Rose Show, Angela sits down with Jasiel, a survivor who grew up inside an Amish Mennonite cult where control was disguised as “holiness,” obedience was demanded at all costs, and abuse was normalized as discipline. Jasiel shares the terrifying reality of childhood shaped by fear, isolation, and religious manipulation—from being taught that “delayed obedience is disobedience,” to living under extreme rules that governed everything from clothing to carpet, from social connection to basic comfort. As her story unfolds, Jasiel also offers powerful insight through the lens of her current work as a psychology student and trauma-informed coach, explaining how early abuse impacts attachment, development, shame, and the nervous system—and what healing can look like when safety finally enters the picture. With bravery and truth, we explore: • Growing up under authoritarian religious control and isolation • How “obedience” and scripture were weaponized to justify harm • The devastating impact of physical, emotional, psychological, and sexual abuse • The loss of safety in attachment, and how it shapes trust vs. mistrust • Forced conformity, gender separation, and the erasure of individuality • How fear, shame, and dissociation became survival tools • CPS involvement, excommunication, and the complicated aftermath • The courage it takes to run, and the realities of staying hidden • Healing through co-regulation, safety, trust, collaboration, and empowerment This is not just a story of survival. It is a story of truth, endurance, and learning to come home to yourself. Trigger Warning: Discussion of child sexual abuse, rape, physical violence, religious trauma, coercive control, emotional/psychological abuse, dissociation, suicidal ideation, and neglect. U.S. defense bill calls for automatic draft registration The Selective Service System has been instructed to make military draft registration automatic. President Trump signed the annual National Defense Authorization Act Dec. 18, a day after the Senate gave its approval to the record $901 billion spending bill. This includes a mandate that the Selective Service System make registration automatic for males ages 18-25. The deadline for implementation is Dec. 18, 2026. Reviving a military draft would require congressional approval. The most recent draft ended in 1973. Draft registration resumed in 1980. The Center on Conscience and War reports Selective Service will implement this legislation by crossmatching data with other federal agencies to register people it believes are required to do so and share that information with military recruiters. The CCW notes that some conscientious objectors consider registration with Selective Service to be a form of participation in war. While automatic registration would eliminate the requirement for these COs to take an action contrary to conscience, it also would place their information within the Selective Service System without their consent. Many men today are registered with Selective Service when they apply for a driver’s license or other state-issued identification. Selective Service’s most recent annual report to Congress indicated the registration rate for men 18-25 in 2024 was 81%, with a specific rate for 18-year-olds of 42%.

My Tormented ChiIdhood in the Old Colony MENNONITES
My Tormented ChiIdhood in the Old Colony MENNONITES In Western Texas is an Old Colony Mennonite settlement where John Guenter grew up. His mother converted and ended up being one of the most strict members there. He was bullied and ab*sed constantly for being gay, even though he wouldn’t even fully understand his orientation until later in life. He was under threat of being k*dnapped and taken to an unlicensed facility in Mexico where they sent people to be “fixed” for various reasons. Aside from the terror of being separated from family and sent to another country, it was well known that the Mennonites in Mexico had ties with the Cartel. He realized it wasn’t safe for him to remain in the settlement and escaped by joining the military as soon as he was able. Follow JT on social media!
