Natalie Meagan paid 25 cents for a copy of The Mercy of Thin Air at a garage sale. Years later, as the successful, charming, and adorable leader of @weirdobookclub.bsky.social, she interviewed yours truly for my novel’s 20th anniversary--her favorite book!

Need a good cry?
“I am a 200lb tattooed ex-biker turned bookstore manager that has no spiritual beliefs other than I believe in love. Your book made me cry so, it passed my test.” —Gerald (That's a reader response I’ll never forget.)

Remember the night you pointed to the North Star and told me that when you were a child, you were afraid the creatures and objects would fall from the sky and crush you. You believed they were there among those constellation points, that if one of those lights went out, like a pin removed from a seam, the weight would tear the rest away and leave them at the mercy of thin air. You were right. We are. Razi the narrator of THE MERCY OF THIN AIR by Ronlyn Domingue

I hold a Boyless Party every couple of months. Somehow, through a network of whispers, women--mostly working girls and poor mothers--discover the location. At first, only one or two women came. Now, the gatherings include five or more. Gertrude has some way of ensuring a small crowd. Razi, narrator from THE MERCY OF THIN AIR by Ronlyn Domingue

Quote From THE MERCY OF THIN AIR by Ronlyn Domingue. "My body is not the one I was born into. In all the moments of breathing, each cell took it's turn at the cycle: growth, repair, decay. But I remain. Nothing of me is mine to keep, other than memory."
Quote From THE MERCY OF THIN AIR by Ronlyn Domingue. “All I ever wanted to do was walk in my garden and enjoy the colors and scents of every season,” she says. “What a surprise it was that my form allows me to be filled with perfume. The breathing who can sense me call me the Rose Ghost because I am always surrounded with that scent.
From THE MERCY OF THIN AIR by Ronlyn Domingue. Daddy said he rolled that change at the speed of a prayer.

From THE MERCY OF THIN AIR by Ronlyn Domingue “Certainly, you are aware of the incredible number of immigrants in this country,” Warren exhales a puff of smoke, “as well as the deep concern over miscegenation. States across the South have banned such mixing. And for several years, the birth rate has dropped severely among the educated.” “So this race suicide, it’s among the whites.” “Exactly.” Warren draws smoke from the last of the cigarette. “A matter of genetics. The intelligent and strong are having fewer children while the dim and weak are having more. What kind of world will we have if we’re overrun by such masses?” “I thought you were a Darwinist, Warren,” Alan says. “Shouldn’t we assume that these ‘masses’ will die out on their own, if natural selection prevails?” Andrew says. Warren smashes his dincher in the ashtray. His brown eyes scorch. “I suppose their death rate from disease is rather high, but the sheer number of them weighs in their favor. Something must be done to curb this threat to our country’s stability.” I glance down at my cup to roll my eyes. “This country is more prosperous that it’s ever been,” Andrew says. “What makes you think we’re threatened?” “Our city alone is overrun by Italians, not to mention the Negroes,” Warren says. “Perhaps we should be reminded that they do a good deal of the work to make our lives easier,” I say. “Typically, they dig and build what we don’t. They clean and scrub what we won’t.” An electrical storm of glances shoots among the men in front of me. “Doesn’t your family have help?” Warren asks. “We do, on occasion. Paula does our laundry, and Mae helps with special dinners and spring cleaning. My mother doesn’t believe in asking others to do what she isn’t willing to do herself. She believes all work has an inherent dignity.”
In the 1920s, eugenics and white supremacy had folks in a froth.
It’s the 2020s, and, well, same s***, different century.

“If you haven’t married yet, get a fake wedding ring. Most doctors won’t tell you a thing if you don’t have a husband. They wouldn’t want to break a precious Comstock law, now would they?” At the end, the bravest ones ask questions in front of the group. Is it true there is a safe time each month? Why does the bosom become so sensitive? Does it hurt? Is this a venial or mortal sin? Occasionally, a woman stays behind with an inquiry the rest don’t need to hear. At these times, Gertrude sends me out with dishes to wash. There are connections in the city that it’s best I can’t name. My purpose, she says, is to ensure that no woman becomes so desperate in the first place. Excerpt from THE MERCY OF THIN AIR
The #1 thing readers told me they were surprised about: that birth control & information about it was once illegal. Yes, Razi, the narrator, broke the law. She could have gone to jail. It’s 100 years later, and what generations fought for is slipping away.

“What does Razi think she is?” my thesis director asked me after reading the book’s first draft. I didn’t know. So I spent months reading about quantum physics to learn the answer.

Being born and raised in the South gave me an advantage to write my first novel. I wanted to make sure I got the details correct, though. Here are some books I read for research.

I managed to get “copacetic” (excellent, very well) into the story along with other great slang words.

Book jacket for The Mercy of Thin Air by Ronlyn Domingue showing a white woman whose bare back and blond bob faces the viewer. The text around the cover reads, "April 1 is this old girl's birthday. Thinking of you, Razi, wherever you are."
The narrator of my first novel remains so special to me, I still remember her birthday.
