Custom People Verticals in Microsoft Search??

Has anyone done this? The "People" search vertical doesn't allow any customisation, and the "SharePoint" data source doesn't return people.

Surely this is possible?? Isn't it??

Been having such weird search issues in SharePoint search crawled properties taking ages to appear so I can map them to managed properties! Multiple Microsoft support calls.
