Just like that, my time at #MIFF2024 is done. I had a great time at the festival this year, and I managed to watch 35 of the 40 films I planned to see. Now that it’s over, I can rest 🤣
Thelma ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Fun film that has an elderly character scammed & goes on a mission to get it back. It never makes fun of the characters but simple scenarios are shown how difficult they can be when in their 90’s. The humor is found in the fact that it is shot like a Mission Impossible film.

Flow ⭐️⭐️⭐️✨
While the graphics are a little lo-fi the animation & characterisation of the various animals isn’t. The story of a team of animals thrown together trying to survive a flooded wasteland is told without any dialogue yet you are never unsure what is happening.

The Organist ⭐️⭐️✨
I really wanted to like this more than I did. It’s well acted but it’s just too much of the same all the way through. There are definite laughs though & Tracey from HR was the highlight for me.

The Moogai ⭐️⭐️⭐️✨
Beautifully shot & superbly directed film about the stolen generation & generational trauma. Loved the character design of the ‘monster’ but sadly found some of the acting let it down a bit & at times a little slow. Will look forward to the next film by the director.

Memoir of a Snail⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✨
This is the film I’ve been looking forward to the most. He last directed a film 15 years ago but this new one didn’t disappoint.
It’s characters have a similar style to previous films. It is both sad & funny & while I could see the end the journey there was worth it.

The Substance – Loved it almost as much as I hated it. Ramps up Black Swan to horrific Grimm fairytale extremes. The initial gore made me so nauseous I had to do my silly muscle tensing exercises for when I get blood taken: a first for me with a film, so I've gotta respect it #MIFF2024
