Photo: Near the center is a fountain spraying bright blue water on and around "rampant" (rearing) horses. All around the fountain, sidewalks circling & radiating from the fountain & on the grass lawn of a park, there are people, many of them carrying signs: "Constitution / Bill of Rights / MAKE THEM REAL;" "Vote Them Out;" "Science Protects Us All;" "DEMOCRACY needs your COURAGE." Quite a few people are wearing deep yellow t-shirts, some of these are volunteers for Respect Missouri Voters.
https://respectmovoters.org/
Beyond the fountain and across the street is a row of stucco commercial buildings with red-tile roofs, a gold-roofed minaret-shaped tower, and the colorfully muraled Plaza Parkway Building, collectively the eastern edge of the Country Club Plaza.
About that fountain: According to the city's Parks Department, it was designed by Henri-Léon Gréber and sculpted in 1910, originally for a mansion on Long Island. It was purchased and brought to Kansas City in 1951 with funds provided by the "J.C. Nichols family, the city and private contributions, including a collection by school children in the Kansas City area." (J.C. Nichols was the developer of the Country Club Plaza, also a racist and antisemite who developed the neighborhood in which I live. He included "covenants" in the deeds of his housing developments that prohibited their sale to Blacks or Jews that were enforceable until 1974, 14 years after the fountain was dedicated as the J.C. Nichols Memorial Fountain.)
Anyway, here's how the Parks Dept.'s fountain description:
"The fountain has four heroic horsemen which are said to represent four of the world’s mighty rivers:the Mississippi River (fending off an alligator), the Volga River (with the bear), the Seine and the Rhine. It also has four smaller figures of children playing on fish, commonly referred to as dolphins."

18 October 2025 got a lot of media attention, and every report put the number of demonstrators in the thousands.
How many thousands? Hard to say. This fountain, by the way, has an interesting back story. (see alt text)

So proud of my daughter. She is committed to standing up for fellow Americans. It was hot. While other 11 year olds are doing other things. She was out here in the heat with us completely committed to the cause! #kansascity #KCMO #missouri #kansascityplaza #millcreekpark #NoKings
