The lace is needle lace, worked into an intricate border as large as the muslin center, which is + shaped, with the needle lace making it into a square. Wedding handkerchiefs are meant for the bride, to daintily dab at tears. If she needs to blow her nose, that’s what her spouse’s plain hanky is for. Yes, it’s very gendered.
