2 more water systems on our explored list: Launched on the Taunton River, the longest undammed river in the Commonwealth, and took a turn up the confluence of the Nemasket (aptly named, translates in Wampanoag to the ‘place of fishes’). #morningpaddle.
Some days you just understand that precip will be happening. Mist. Fog. Drizzles. Short squalls. All on the menu today.
but we’re always glad to get out there. #morningpaddle.
Put in at high water makes for a speedy trip downstream and a great workout coming home. The riverbanks brought us sights of grazing beavers, redwings singing loudly and a VERY confused coyote who did not expect to see us!

On approach to Rocky Narrows, a uniquely squoze part of the Charles river in its 70+ mild journey. Trusty doggo happy to be back on the water. #morningpaddle
Back on the river after the melting of the ice. CLEARLY: the river has reawakened and is re-energized with rainwater and a re-emerged populace of beaver, muskrats, deer and returning waterfowl.
Spring has sprung!
Banjo has resumed his bowman’s post to watch for trouble.

38 degrees on a November morning means the critters pretty much keep to themselves, leaving us to enjoy a calm pass through one of our favorite stretches. #morningpaddle.
5 star New England October days reveal some insomniac turtles and this summer’s cygnets all grown up along the upper Charles. Redwing Bay put in rocks!

Went a bit afield to the Taunton River. Lovely and complicated by many, many blowdowns. Banjo was a champ for the many times we had so portage over big trunks and shoesucking mud. Still, glad to have sampled Mass's longest undammed river!

Sunrise 6:43 am means headlamp at put in. Then, unexpectedly, we came upon a pair of otters porpoising around a river bend. Attempted to capture their playful curiosity at us (no joy, just ripples on video)…but the surprise made for a special start to a gorgeous new day.

Every September one is reminded how quickly the days shorten. Now, going out for a 6 am put in, we find ourselves in the pitch dark. We return as the day starts, just in time to absorb all of the beauty around us, and one of a few critters under us!

Assabet is the Algonquin word for ‘the place where fishing nets come from’
This morning, that river was a place indeed with many fish speeding over its sandy bottom. We were serenaded by the crickets and happy to wend our way around the many blowdowns. Just beautiful.

Stowed away on the FineWife's trip to her rowing session at Community Rowing. Put in at Zero Dark Thirty and Doggo and I paddled almost 6 river miles til we met back at the dock. Cambridge and Alliston wake up beautifully while the crews work the river.

Water low enough this could have been a wet stroll
Trade off: excellent viewing of resident bass, carp and sizable snapping turtles bathed in the early glow

Treated this morning to a greeting by a horned owl on our way out, and came upon what looked like a shipwreck on our way back. Alas, no treasure to be had.

Behold the badass special forces grade of macho turtles of the Assabet river. Who will be the last to plorp into the drink?

Great blue heron encounter.
Doggo unawares per usual.

Summer mornings remind us how fleeting is the way the gold light of daybreak plays just so on the river

When is a river a brook? The historic Shawsheen comes close, but wins outright for being an open secret of waterfowl, startled deer and critters. And, just downstream from our pullout we visited the unbelievable canal aqueduct that bridged barges OVER the river…in 1817!

What a gem we found in the Swift River! Crystal clear waters with scads of trout visible along the sandy bottoms while kingfishers and the occasional eagle fly above. Put in near Belchertown made for a great trip! #morningpaddle
