It is, of course, #BlackHistoryMonth and I have not talked enough about Black History in my classes, my life because of everything else. BHM is more vital today than ever because it reminds us of all the parts of our humanity. #LangstonHughes, for one, reminds me to be my #mosthuman self.

With rich people telling us we'd all be happier if we just ate better and rich people telling us we can't believe what we believe, I turn to Wellbutrin to help me feel and #poetry to help me remember how to be my #mosthuman self. This lovely poem from the 12/24 issue of Poetry reminds me...

Separation Wall

--Naomi Shihab Nye, 2019

When the milk is sour,
it separates.

The next time you stop speaking,
ask yourself why you were born.

They say they are scared of us.
The nuclear bomb is scared of the cucumber.

When my mother asks me to slice cucumbers,
I feel like a normal person with fantastic dilemmas:

Do I make rounds or sticks? Shall I trim the seeds?
I ask my grandmother if there was ever a time

she felt like a normal person every day,
not in danger, and she thinks for as long

as it takes a sun to set and says, Yes.
I always feel like a normal person.

They just don’t see me as one.
We would like the babies not to find out about

the failures waiting for them. I would like
them to believe on the other side of the wall

is a circus that just hasn’t opened yet. Our friends,
learning how to juggle, to walk on tall poles.

Because some of the humanity on display feels...unhuman, I have decided to start posting poems that make me feel #mosthuman I teach this poem in #creativewriting to introduce exigency, or writing in the moment. Nye often makes me feel the humanity of her moments and of the moment of reading.

Linda Pastan's poem "All We Have To Go By" from the August 1991 issue of Poetry.

Linda Pastan's poem "All We Have To Go By" from the August 1991 issue of Poetry.

When the world seems too much, I turn to #poetry to rediscover why I love people; work that reminds me what it is to be human. Here is one poem (from *Poetry* Aug 1991) by Linda Pastan, fitting on a snowy day, that helps me be my most human self. I'd love to see your go to #mosthuman poems.
