NASA Reveals Geological Origins of Mount Arkanu in the Sahara
NASA's Earth Observatory has uncovered the geological origins of Mount Arkanu, a massive formation in Libya's Sahara Desert previously thought to be caused by an extraterrestrial impact. The massif, notable for its concentric rocky rings spanning 15 miles, was formed through repeated volcanic magma intrusions over hundreds of millions of years, overturning earlier theories. The rings consist of layers of igneous basalt and granite, with their centers aligned toward the southwest. A distinctive 'hat-shaped' formation of sandstone, limestone, and quartz crowns the massif, adding to its geological complexity. Mount Arkanu is also home to ancient petroglyphs depicting animals and human figures, indicating that local nomads, including the Bedouin tribe, used the area for seasonal grazing and shelter. Despite being in a hyper-arid desert, the massif receives slightly more rainfall than surrounding areas due to orographic precipitation, supporting sparse vegetation and occasional wadis that flow through the landscape. The interaction of igneous and sedimentary rocks, combined with the site's role as a water source and grazing ground, highlights both natural and cultural significance, showing how humans have historically adapted to this unique environment.
