EPITAPH OF IULIA FLORENTINA, 320-326. COPY, DIOCESAN MUSEUM, CATANIA

"To Julia Florentina, a very sweet and innocent child, who had become a believer, her father placed (this epitaph). She, born a pagan the day before the Nones of March (= March 6), before dawn, when Zoilus was corrector of the province, baptised at 18 months and 22 days, at the eighth hour of the night, breathing her last sigh, survived four hours so as to repeat the usual acts and died in Hybla at the first hour of the seventh day before the calends of October (= September 25). While both parents were mourning her death at every moment, at night the voice of the (divine) Majesty arose and forbade them to mourn the deceased, whose body was buried in front of the doors that are of the martyrs of Christ in her niche, the tenth, by the work of the presbyter, four days before the Nones of October (= October 4)."

For #EpigraphyTuesday we're looking at a suspiciously clean C4 CE script: that's because this is a copy of the original, which is in the warehouses of the #Louvre instead of being the star of the show in the #MuseoDiocesano of #Catania. /1 #AncientBluesky 🏺

#Museodiocesano Alberga el conjunto mural de pinturas románicas de España, que cubría las naves y el ábside de la iglesia de los Santos Julián y Basilisa de Bagüés.
La sala Bagüés acaba con la idea de que el románico es solo piedra.

TECA OF MANLIA DEDALIA, 375-400 CE. MUSEO DIOCESANO, MILAN

This small silver container, a slightly flattened sphere in two halves joined by a hinge and a bayonet catch, was found inside the extraordinary beaten-silver casket called the Capsella di S. Nazaro in 1984, under the altar of the early Christian church of S. Nazaro in Milan. It probably contained some of the ashes of a Roman noblewoman named Manlia Dedalia, the sister or wife of the consul of 399, Flavius Manlius Theodorus. She was a supporter of St Ambrose and a close friend of his sister Marcellina. The teca has an inscription on the top half, surrounding a chrismon: DEDALIA VIVAS, and on the bottom half IN CHRISTO, "Dedalia, may you live in Christ". She was not a saint, but she clearly wished for her remains to be close to the relics in the capsella.

For #SarcophagusSaturday a rather unusual burial container, a silver sphere of ashes now in the #MuseoDiocesano of #Milan, buried inside a #reliquary of the late C4 that contained fragments of the bones of the #Apostles. The ashes were those of a noblewoman close to #Ambrose. #AncientBluesky 🏺
