“I thought I already told you I enjoyed spending my time with you, Phainon? That includes calling you, or texting you.” “Why didn’t you then?” Phainon asks, his words clipping at the heels of Mydei’s. Mydei flinches, caught entirely off-guard. “What?” “Why didn’t you text me? Or call me?” he asks. Mydei purses his lips. He lowers his head and stares at his hand. Taps his foot against the floor. “I didn’t have much to say,” he says. Which, that isn’t entirely the truth. There were plently of times when he thought of Phainon throughout the week. He thought of messaging Phainon a picture of a dog he saw that reminded him of the other, clothes so bright and so ugly that he’s sure Phainon would like them, restaurants he thinks the other would enjoy if he knew about them. But he’d always talk himself out of messaging—stuck wondering if the other would respond, or even appreciate the text. In hindsight, the hypocrisy of his words is almost embarrassing.

“You think we still would’ve met in this alternate universe where you’re a chef and I’m a pilot?” Phainon asks. “Like, maybe I’m trying out a new restaurant during a layover in Castrum Kremnos or something, and it’s so good that I want to give my compliments to the chef. So you come out, and we hit it off immediately and exchange numbers and get close.” Mydei laughs. “Sounds like you’ve thought about this a lot.” “Only as much as I could for the past few minutes,” Phainon says. He lifts their joined hands, running a thumb along the veins on the back of Mydei’s hand. “What do you think?” Mydei smiles. “I think we would’ve met, even if we weren’t doing what we’re doing now,” he says. “It doesn’t matter anyway though, does it? We’re not living in an alternate universe where you’re a pilot and I’m a chef. We’re living in this one, and we’ve already met.”

“Are there really such embarrassing stories about you?” Mydei asks, raising a brow. “No,” Phainon exclaims at the same time Cyrene says, “Yes.” “He’s a charming boy for sure,” says Cyrene, speaking like she’s talking about a friend’s son and not her childhood friend, “but he can be a lot stupid.” “Hey!” “And he has a terrible sense of fashion too,” Cyrene continues. “The only reason he looks half-decent is because Aglaea picked out his wardrobe herself.” “You have the Goldweaver as your personal stylist?” Mydei asks, brow raised. Phainon looks like he’s trying to sink into his chair. “She’s worried that… the public might not appreciate my personal style,” Phainon says delicately. “She’s worried it will destroy his reputation. Here,”—she pulls her teleslate out and swipes up, giddy with excitement—“I have pictures!” “Wait—” Cyrene practically throws her teleslate at Mydei, leaning over Phainon to show it to him.

“I already told you I thought you were talented,” Mydei says, “last night. But, even before then, I thought you were talented.” Phainon chuckles, a short sound that’s more breath than laugh if Mydei’s being honest. “I know, but I wanted to hear it in-person and have you hear it for yourself.” Phainon shoots him a charmingly silly smile, one that softens his eyes into something well-intentioned and earnest. “I’m good, aren’t I?” Mydei flicks Phainon’s forehead. Phainon flinches. “You’re good,” he says gruffly. “Obviously.” Phainon preens, and it makes Mydei’s chest warm.
