Flyer reading: Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras invites [blank] to the opening night of Lookin' Good, an exhibition by Koori gay and lesbian artists. Boomalli Aboriginal Artists Co-operative, 27 Abercrombie St Chippendale, 6pm Wednesday 2 February 1994.
Photograph of Bundjalung man Matthew Cook leaning against a brick wall, wearing a white jumping and patched blue jeans.
In 1994 "Lookin’ Good" was one of Australia’s first queer First Nations art exhibitions. It featured works including co-curator Matthew Cook’s jeans (pictured) patched with the Aboriginal flag, and Bronwyn Bancroft's posters exploring queer Blak men’s experience during the AIDS crisis.

Poster of Condoman, a Blak superhero in a red and yellow costume, saying "Don't be shame, be game. Use condoms!"
During the AIDS crisis, Biri health worker Aunty Gracelyn Smallwood saw that safe sex advertising wasn’t reaching First Nations people in remote communities. So her team created Condoman, a safe-sex superhero, who spoke in relateable language, and removed stigma from sexual health.

Uncle Jack Charles, an older Aboriginal man, smiling and holding a record with his image on it, standing in a record shop.
“...there are many Aboriginal people who are gay ... we’re so proud we’ve made our mark and stamped our ground. ... us gay and Indigenous mob, we’re fringe dwellers twice over, and that’s what gives us great strength.”
-First Nations actor and activist Uncle Jack Charles

For #6Degrees this #NAIDOC2024 I used First Nations fiction to riff on the meaning of the word Kairos — which Google Translate tells me means ‘weather’, ‘the right time’, ‘season’, or ‘opportunity’. anzlitlovers.com/2024/07/06/s...
