Nelumbo flowers on the second day of flowering
Nelumbo flowers open early in the morning and close before noon. This opening and closing movement is normally repeated for three days, after which all the petals fall off when the flower opens on the fourth day.Detailed observations of Nelumbo flower movement are limited. In “Structural changes in Nelumbo flower petals during opening and closing” in this issue, Ishizuna et al. carried out observation of petal cells during Nelumbo flowering. They found the Nelumbo petals opened and closed repeatedly as they elongated during the 4-day flowering period. The epidermal cells in the basal region of the inner petals on both axes, gradually increased in cell size during the
flowering period through cycles of repeated increases as the petals opened and decreases as they closed.
