It's time for the odd to get even...
Introducing... Nerdvember! Throughout the month of November (and December, maybe!), I'm gonna draw a bunch of Nerdy fetish OCs doing various... things.

What defines a Nerd here?
1. Has glasses
2. Very passionate about something

Look forward to it!

A sea faring island nation has named sectors of its coastline, which are read in detailed weather reports for sailors. These include Forties, Crommerty, Dogger, Fitzroy and each is followed by a pressure trend and weather summary - low rising, becoming calm etc

#Nerdvember 30: you're tuned into Test Match Special on longwave radio, a tense moment in the international cricket match - England's batters making a fist of it - then coverage is interrupted for The Shipping Forecast.
It's the poetry of announcers reading field placements & coastal region names

#Nerdvember Day 30

On this final day, it has to be the Professor. An eccentric Old English don who changed the world. Certainly changed mine.

His works were my teenage nerd deep-dive obsession. Parsing footnotes in Unfinished Tales was peak geek fun.

So I’m raising a wee glass to JRR Tolkien 🥃

The first Jackie Chan film I saw was The Young Master on late night satellite TV & had never seen such a combination of martial arts, acrobatics and comedy. Rented more of his films on VHS & my family also became fans. Bought as many as I could, then DVDs and now Blu Ray.

The Year Nerd Culture Took Over the Mainstream In the transcendental year of 1999, it became clear to me that I was extremely cool. No, that’s a lie, please don’t take that declaration even remotely seriously. I was twelve and thirteen years o...

Nerds becoming Normal

In my youth, nerd habits were quiet, shared with a few like minded souls. Weird. Esoteric. A bit, well, sniggery.

Then, inexorably and irresistibly, nerd culture took over. Everyone finally *got* it.

We were truly pioneers…

Passing the Nerd Torch

Thinking about this for various reasons today. Grateful to my folks for The Hobbit and Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator and bringing me to Star Wars and Clash of the Titans.

And to my kids, who share and humour their own facets of my nerdy obsessions

There's nothing I can say about Sir Terry Pratchett that hasn't been said better, but I love his work & I know from when he had a signing in the bookshop I worked at that his reputation as a decent person is well earned. I own most of his books, here's just one shelf.

Ursula K LeGuin

Is there anyone else who created such iconic works of both fantasy and SF? And did it as a woman in what was, back then, a very masculine world?

Mould breaker, myth maker, writer of great skill and boundless imagination.

My favourite? The Earthsea Tales.

My favourite board game Talisman turned 40 this year and still going strong. 4 physical editions plus digital, including a new physical disc with card art, I own them all plus expansions except 3rd & have played at least once a week on average in all 40 years.

The Aubrey & Maturin series by Patrick O’Brian

Across 20 erudite, witty, evocative and compelling volumes we follow the story of one of the great depictions of male friendship, each character in all their flawed glory. Arguably the best sustained work of historical fiction.

My first home computer was the ZX81 but the Spectrum is still my greatest retro love & I still own all but the +3 from new, even the Next.

Having More Books Than You Can Possibly Read

I know I have no hope of reading all the books I buy. This used to make me feel bad. Then I decided I was building a library, not a “to be read” pile. Suddenly I felt better, funnily enough.

Piles of books are great.

Space!

A big part of being into SF was from growing up in the Golden Age of space exploration. Its blend of romantic adventure and high tech bling was nerd catnip. High point for me was Voyager I & II at Jupiter. The awed glee of those JPL scientists was delightful.

Ad Astra!

I first discovered The HitchHiker's Guide to the Galaxy via the TV show & was instantly hooked. Soon after I discovered the book in a second hand shop. The best version is the original radio series but the scripts (sadly out of print) are even better thanks to Dougas Adams' notes.

Dune.

Brian Herbert created SF’s answer to LOTR. And expanded it. Then broke it (God-Emperor? M’eh). But that original book!

The sense of a living universe full of long history and murky politics, a mighty meditation on power, fanaticism and humanity. And Arrakis.

Sandworms!

Living near many seaside towns, weekends at the Arcades meant slot and penny pushing machines. But everything changed when Pong & Boot Hill arrived. Then single players like Space Invaders, Donkey Kong, Pac-Man & Rampage followed & my new weekend obsession was born.

ZX Spectrum, and the other great early 80s home computers.

Atic Atac!

The first game I played obsessively. If I’d known the hours I’d spend playing these for the next 40 years would I have put the joystick down and walked away?

God no!

Plus, of course, my intro to IT 😁

When my parents were out, my older sisters were in charge & I would stay up while they watched horror films. I most remember Zoltan, Hound of Dracula (aka Dracula's Dog) - namely because my sister Julie dropped ice cubes down the back of my eldest sister while she was engrossed...

The Daredevils by Marvel UK

My gateway to Marvel Comics, and a lifelong fandom. Mad brilliant Alan Moore Brit superhero story with Harry 20 artist (and Dr Who comic crossovers!). AND Frank Miller Daredevil stories!

🤯

Marvel UK, If you did a collection I’d buy in an instant.
