A woman leaned over him. Her mouth was set in a stern line, nearly as stiff as the walking corpse at her side. It shifted her pleasant features in a way that reminded Zhuzhi-Lang of someone else. One of her eyebrows arched. “What the hell is this?” Zhuzhi-Lang had heard such words aimed at him many times before, but the woman didn’t sound disgusted by him. Just annoyed. It was an unusual reaction, considering his current form was more snake than man. “Jiejie…” The corpse paused, his hoarse voice held a remarkable meekness. “He was dying. I…I couldn’t leave him.”

More vibrant winding vines join the first in attempting to take hold of his form but Zhuzhi-lang is slippery, easily sliding out of the way and slicing through jabbing roots with razor-sharp nails. He has just found an opening to move closer when a shuddering growl splits the night. Zhuzhi-lang’s head whips up in time to see a tall bipedal thing slam straight into the yao. He leaps backwards to avoid getting in the way but one of the tendrils is clasped around his ankle and it yanks him forth. Zhuzhi-lang digs his heels into the dirt to slow his approach and glances at the newcomer. Glowing yellow eyes meet pitch black. He lets out an involuntary, “Ah.” “Oh, hello!” The corpse from the marketplace works stiff lips up into a wobbly smile. Thick dark veins strain against the pale skin of his hands as he clenches them into fists; he punches straight through the flowering abomination without sparing a look. “I was hoping to see you again.”
