Affordable housing shouldn’t feel like winning the lottery, but here we are. Rego Park opening 101 units starting at $545 is proof the crisis isn’t “natural” — it’s policy-made. Build more, gouge less, house people. #HousingJustice #NYCPolicy

🏙️⚖️ NYC’s housing surge hides a policy problem: 485x wage cliffs are driving developers to stop at 99 units, limiting the larger buildings the city needs. And with Manhattan’s median rent at $4,600, the policy-production gap is growing.

In recent years, the City has taken a number of measures against public enemy number one, the infamous NYC rat. From hiring a rat czar to rolling out trash containerization to rat mitigation zones, the fight is on. Image shows a Reuters headline about the rat czar.
How does NYC track these mitigation efforts? 311 calls! Each report helps the city monitor rat activity and evaluate if anti-rat efforts are working. Image shows screenshot of the Contact 311 page on NYC government website.
311 received 39727 rodent complaints in 2024, down from 41748 in 2023. That is a decrease of 4.84 percent. But keep in mind that 311 complaints only measure reported sightings of rats, not necessarily the actual number of rats in the city.
This map breaks down 311 rat complaints by neighborhood. Certain neighborhoods in Brooklyn and Manhattan appear to have the highest number of rat complaints. By neighborhood, we are referring to Neighborhood tabulation areas, which are approximations of neighborhoods created for reporting census data.
In recent years, the City has introduced a few measures to combat public enemy #1: the infamous New York City rat. 🐀
This map breaks down 311 rat complaints by neighborhood.

6️⃣ bring back al fresco dining but:
1. make it clear how the rules work
2. make it simple how the rules work
3. offer subsidy and technical assistance to making the rules work
4. stop listening to drivers who want free parking. (in general) #nycpolicy
5️⃣ encourage an ungodly amount of public art and incorporate it into every project where possible. we must be more creative and attract the best creatives and artists to stay and make a city less *pristine* #nycpolicy
4️⃣ reorganize and reissue the fiscal structure of NYCHA. we desperately need more transparency and dignity for recipients of public housing. the city should also purchase a million more units and expand its social housing program. #nycpolicy
3️⃣ plant and maintain several million trees and accompany them with bioswales, permeable beds, and other tree-adjacent floral improvements. the benefits are plentiful and replicable and affordable. #nycpolicy
