Of Thunder & Lightning is about, in some senses, how two robot girls absolutely punching the lights out of each other is the most romantic thing on a barren corporate-capitalist earth. While I was drawing said book, I looked at my side characters, pointed at two middle aged women and said: “what if they had history and weird, pathetic energy.” So once I finished that book, I ended up drawing what became 60+ pages of strange short stories generally tracking our head Gardener Sif backwards in time, and her relationship with her job and the Flowers of Yggdrasil. And that’s what you’re holding now. A lot of these pages - of the original comic and these side stories - come from a space of wondering how being an “artist” fits in with hypercapitalist “industry.” What is our responsibility to others, and to ourselves? Corporations demand that we all both consume and put ourselves up as product. Their glitzy world promises smoothness, effortlessness. I’m not someone inclined towards absolutes. But more and more, I believe friction exists in your heart, your soul, and that’s where connection lives too. Even if you feed your lungs poison and your gut is full of rot and your bones feel like death, you cannot escape your humanity. So, despite it all, connect. Create. Pick up a damn piece of paper and draw. -K
