It's been too long that I can't find the original post, but I still wanted to flex the research I did. So here's a tread of my OCs names and their meaning. And when there is no meaning, I'll describe the inspiration for their name were I can...

A set of drawings of side characters that are related to my OC Sara. From left to right on the top row we have the father, the uncle, and the mother.

On the bottom row are various drafts I made while designing Sara's mother. Draft 1 focusing more on body structure, while draft two focuses more on being in a dynamic pose. Draft 3 takes draft 2 and plays around with a different hair style and skin tone.

Sara's mother is a native to Char Island, the place Sara was born and grew up on. While her father and uncle are non-natives. So, for her mother and father in particular, I been pondering and brainstorming trying to get an idea what would be the best skin tone for them that fits their origins. Currently I'm playing around with the idea of having her uncle match Sara's skin tone, rather than it being directly inherited from her mother or father. Especially since the uncle character would be more prominent in the story anyways.

Family Tree
I've been spending the past few weeks brainstorming character designs for members of Sara's family. While I'm don't think I've finalized any of these quite yet, I'm at least at a point where I'm happy with how they currently look enough to share.

Part of my sketch of a concept level for my Dream game, Overseer of the Elements, drawing in the style of a comic panel. In it I show off the concept of a forest area where the party first meet's the wind user of the party, Nayla. Puzzles feature using her arrows to solve puzzles while hunting down bad guys causing trouble in the forest. The art is intended to be read from top to bottom, then left to right. The captions read as follows.

Squall Forest:
Home to Nayla and her brother, two often act as guides through it. Meeting up with Sara and company, she uses them as an opportunity to go out on her own adventure. Little known to all of them, the bad guys are already stirring trouble...
Dungeon-wise, this area's puzzles introduces using Nayla's bow to reach far-off obstacles and mixes them with Myi used in the intro dungeon. They Myi you have access to is still basic, but as a 2nd/3rd dungeon they are beginning to be mixed in more interesting ways. Such as first moving a log blocking a torch on the other side of the river out of the way, igniting a torch on your side of the river, and then shooting a Myi arrow through the torch to hit the log on the other side of the river to burn it.
Meanwhile, the baddles are still up to no good. Even upsetting the guardian of the forest.

It took way too long, but I finally made a new concept reference sheet for an Overseer of the Elements level. So I might as well share it.

May have only done this so I can check it off my art bingo board. But I've been meaning to do more sketches of character skills and team-ups for a while now. So, sure.

A reference sheet for my original character, Sara. The top-left corner shows the character from multiple angles. The lower-left shows off the character in multiple poses of various expressions. The upper-right corner has her wearing a variety of different costumes. The center features a close-up of her face and a color pallet. The lower right corner lists character traits and gameplay related features. General traits include the following. Pronouns she/her. Outgoing and assertive. May appear arrogant, but is often times level-headed and a voice of reason. Put those she cares for before herself. High tolerance level, but you don't want to be the one that makes her snap. Get aggressive when angry or upset. An area of comfort for those close to her. Gameplay structure. General stat spread of well rounded with slight offense preference. Can do team-up abilities without the assist of a second party member.

A drawing of characters from my dream game, Overseer of the Elements, dressed up for Halloween night. Dark gray clouds and a blue/green moon make up the background.

From left to right we have Nayla as Princess Daisy from Mario Tennis, Sole as Rosalina from Mario Galaxy, and Techie as Toadette from various Mario games.

With them are a handful of Halloween Sol Spirits as well. Behind Nayla we have a wind Sol Spirit with a shape more resembling an owl.

To the right of it is a water Sol Spirit. The clouds that normally making up the bottom of it's ice cube body are now bat wings instead. With icicles sticking out from it's head to form ears like a bat and eyes.

Below it is a fire Sol Spirit. It takes on the shape of a piece of charcoal emitting a ghostly flame. By Sole's feet is another fire Sol Spirit. This one looks like a lizard with charcoal around it's body. The piece on its head resembles a witch hat and is emitting fire.

Last but not least is an Earth Sol Spirit by Techie's feet. It has the head of a carved pumpkin with rocks sticking out from the sides of its head and tree roots for feet.

Some practice sketches as I try to narrow down how I want the Halloween editions of my Sol Spirit creatures to look. On the left, we have two concepts for water Sol Spirits. Where I take the orgin ice cube on a cloud with water vapor theme and try to make it look more like a bat. I especially like the concept of taking icicles and stalagmites to form ears.

The design in the center is Wisp, the fire Sol Spirit. A concept of a single piece of charcoal forming the illusion of a lizard is one I did before, but I thought it was fitting for the ghost vibes of Halloween. Above it is another fire Sol Spirit attempt where the charcoal on its head looks like a witch hat.

The final 3 concepts in the lower right corner are air Sol Spirits. First attempting one that looks like a raven. Then, a pair that takes on a shape closer to an owl.

Taking Day 30 off to double down on day 31. But I did do some practice sketches as I was working on Halloween Sol Spirit designs. And since day 30 is ghost, I guess this vaguely fits anyway.

Joe and Sole are standing near a bush in a dark forest, talking. Joe says the following, "So there I was, pwning/owning Shadow Claws..." The bush in the background is rustling.

Suddenly, sharp eyes and pointed teeth appear from the bush. Joe is horrified. Joe then runs off in terror, shouting, "Ahh." Sole stares at the spooky face in confusion.

Out from bushes appears a friendly feline person that the pair were waiting on. Sole responds with, "Oh! There you are. You startled us lurking around like that." The other girl responds, "Oh, sorry," not realizing she spooked the pair.

Speaking of, back to #bweirdoctober. Day 27 Fear.
I go back and forward on if this is still cannon, but typically, fire Mentalists don't like water. A bad run in with water Mentalist, lack of swimming, it affecting their powers. I'm not good with being consistent on why.

A page of sketches for the concepts of a couple abilities that can be used on the overworld.

The top is focused on an ability called "Tunnel". Tunnel lets you traverse underground through sand and similarly soft dirt. Secrets can also be uncovered via digging down on or jumping up into special markings on the ground. Our protagonist is being shown off tunneling into the ground, popping back out, and getting an item from underground.

On the bottom is growth and two ways it could be implemented on the bottom left is a Earth Mentalist using their power to grow plants. On the right is using growth via summoning rain to water the plants.

I think this was around the time I was coming up with the concept of Sol Spirits, so that's why there was so many drastically different designs for the same creature. I went through quite a bit of brainstorming for each before narrowing down on their current designs. #OC #OverseeroftheElements

An old fire Sol Spirit design from 2020. This one in particular used for one of my main character's partner Sol Sprits. It is a hybrid between a snake and a dragon. Drawing more cat-like features for the face and feet. The general body shape draws from the western interpretation of dragons. With a very dark body that's a blend between red and purple. With pink used for the ears, noses, underbelly, part of the wings, and feet pads. The under belly is scaly. It has a happy expression, it's hard to see the mouth with how dark red the general face is.

Like I initially had this cat-dragon like creature design that I consider making Sara's partner Sol Spirit in particular. But I'm much more content with her Sol Spirit being a lizard like the other fire Sol Spirits these days. #OC #OverseeroftheElements

An old concept for Fire Sol Spirits I drew back around 2020, with my watermark on top. It a set of 3 blue round creatures that loosely resemble charcoal with flames bursting from their head. It's a light blue like color with a dark blue trim on the bottom of each of them. They have angry eyes to make them seem more aggressive.
