GEOMETRIC MOSAIC PAVEMENT, C. 30 BCE. HOUSE OF LIVIA While there is much to suggest that the domus said to be of Augustus was never the house of Augustus, this coeval domus contains lead pipes stamped with the name of IVLIA AVGVSTA, Livia's name after the death of her husband, when Augustus posthumously adopted her into the Julian house and gave her the use of his title. It was already semi-subterranean at the time, as we can tell from the downward ramp in the entrance hall. The mosaics here are quite simple but elegant, in black and white, this one, between the atrium and the tablinum, a framed rectangle based on hexagons and triangles. Livia raised her great-grandson Caligula in this house, though they didn't seem at all fond of each other. I imagine him in his little boots walking across this mosaic.

WALL FRESCO FROM THE "CUBICULUM" OF THE HOUSE "OF AUGUSTUS", 30 BCE. PALATINE HILL In this rather unclear scene, we can make out two female figures. One, at centre left, is taller and facing away from us, her hair tied behind her head. She's wearing a white peplos and himation, and the elegant line of her neck draws our attention down to her shoulder and along her arm. Facing her is a shorter girl we see in profile, tilting her head as if listening as she looks at the woman in white. The girl has her brown hair in a bun and her white peplos leaves a shoulder uncovered. Her peplos is, however, red-brown with a flower or leopard-skin pattern on it. She carries a silver plate. I hope these two women are having a conversation that isn't about men, but we'll never know.

HUNT SARCOPHAGUS, MID C1-C3 CE. SUBWAY STATION COLOSSEO-FORI IMPERIALI This white marble sarcophagus is too worn to allow a more specific dating, but it shows a lion hunt, a theme that appears frequently on the sarcophagi of men. Here we see three couples of men in short tunics or just a chlamys (in one case nude), each couple ganging up on one lion. Two dogs are also hunting with the humans. The setting is a forest, indicated by trees growing here and there. The central man, probably representing the deceased, raises his arm to strike the fatal blow to a lion who is otherwise getting the better of a second human opponent. This heroic figure's chlamys flies upward dramatically from under his forearm. The box was found on the Palatine hill, presumably in one of the C16 gardens there, where it probably served as a fountain, to judge from the three drain holes in the front.
Be careful: these lethal predators hunt in pairs. For #SarcophagusSaturday we have a box on display in the new #subway station #ColosseoForiImperiali in #Rome, which shows three groups of two men hunting three lions. It comes from the #Palatine, where it was used as a #fountain. #AncientBluesky 🏺

BONE PLAQUE WITH GODDESS, C7 BCE. NATIONAL ARCHAEOLOGICAL MUSEUM, ATHENS The cult of the Meter Megale, the Greek form of the Magna Mater, was connected with the worship of Demeter and Persephone, and Artemis. An exhibition in the Forum and Palatine explores this cult from its Phrygian origins to its Roman final form. The Great Mother was a source for many other divinities. Here we see her as an archaic Potnia Theron (the "Lady of Animals"), holding a bird by the neck in each hand, with a bird perched on each shoulder. She wears her hair falling over her shoulders, and her dress has a bell skirt and tight bodice with long sleeves. This bone ornament was part of a fibula left as an offering at the major shrine of Artemis Orthia in Spartan territory. This version of Artemis demanded human blood sacrifice like her Phrygian ancestress, but in the form of a flogging ritual for the young men of Sparta, who had to run the gauntlet of whips to get a prize of cheese on the altar.

GEOMETRIC FLOOR MOSAIC, C. 125 CE. DOMUS TIBERIANA The history of this first imperial palace begins with Nero, though it is not impossible that its earliest nucleus was the domus of the Claudii Nerones where Tiberius grew up. This was the residence of Caligula and Claudius, so the house must have been palatial. When Nero came to the throne it would have been the obvious choice for development, and it was incorporated into his Domus Transitoria and then, after the fire of 64, rebuilt again as part of his project for the Domus Aurea. We begin to find it called the Domus Tiberiana only in the early C2, perhaps to avoid the mention of Nero and Domitian. The latter expanded the base of the palace all the way to the Clivus Victoriæ on the slope of the Palatine facing the Forum, with rooms facing the street and possibly serving as offices or places where citizens could go to interact with the imperial bureaucracy. This black and white mosaic pavement of Domitianic or Hadrianic date shows a sober knot of double meanders crossing to make swastikas, a symbol of good fortune referring to the sun.

ŒCUS FRESCO, C. 30 BCE. HOUSE "OF AUGUSTUS", PALATINE HILL This sumptuous frescoed wall is an extraordinary example of the sophistication of late Republican painting. Painstakingly reconstructed from hundreds of fragments in the C20, this was one of the most important reception rooms in the house, with a small decorative portico around three sides of the room and the fourth side open to the peristyle garden off the left-hand side of this photo. It is almost incredibly lavish, with its lower half covered in panels of cinnabar separated by dark green bands covered in tiny floral and human images. Above a green and pink cornice, illusionistic architecture opens onto scenes of people gathering outside as if watching events in the room.
