Nikolai "Niko" Bazhanov was born human on the 24th of December 2000 in the basement of Lockview Saint-Webster Church, to a sister of the convent, following her love affair with the priest. Finding herself unwilling to part with the infant, she swaddled him and left him on the doorstep of the same church so that she could pretend to have adopted him - her pregnancy was kept secret. Niko was a strange child; from a young age he would see things nobody selse could, and he would know things he shouldn't have known, always with the same explanation - the ghosts told him about it. He spent his early childhood being passed from psychiatrist to psychiatrist, until diagnoses of autism and childhood-onset schizophrenia were settled upon and he began antipsychotics, which silenced the ghosts. He was quiet and shy and kept to himself, quite happy to sit alone and draw in his small attic room. When he was 14 years old, tragedy struck - a fire consumed the church and everyone in it. Niko was the sole survivor but he suffered severe burns. When he woke up in the ICU an unknown amount of time later he had a vision of the devil, standing at the foot of his hospital bed. He decided at that moment to run away to avoid the foster system. Later that day, as he was sitting in an alleyway trying to decide where to go, triggered by the stress and trauma, his dormant infernal genes awoke and his transformation began. Over the course of a few nightmarish days, his feet morphed into hooves, horns sprouted from his head, and his skin peeled off, revealing red skin beneath. He found his way into the supernatural underworld, working as a drug mule for a local bridge troll as payment for being allowed to live in the shell of an old van on her territory. Five years later the story begins, I couldn't possibly describe it, but I've described his epilogue in the next alt text.

After a whirlwind story across time and space, Niko learned the truth and purpose of his existence - he was an incarnation of Charon, and the ghostly figures that had followed him around for as long as he could remember were the souls he was tasked with guiding to the afterlife. After saving the world from the embodiment of nonexistence (long story) he returned to his own time and town: 2020 Baron River (the forgotten 51st state of America). He settled in a small downtown apartment and lived a simple, happy life, painting portraits of each ghost as they told him their life and death story before passing on.
My character from a 2022 campaign that was so good, two of the players started writing novels about it. Check the alt text for backstory and lore :)
